2009 Quilt block of the month - February

Awww... the puppies are adorable!!!!! I want a puppy! lol. Don't mind me... my hubby accidentally let our two dogs out at the same time the other day (a no-no... one at a time works best - they don't go far and they listen better) and they still aren't back. I'm getting really scared.

So since, I'm really missing my dogs, I'm going to take comfort in your cute little puppies!

Skand, you did brighten that goth fabric up a bit with the white, good job! You sure are braver than me though, I am staying with the simpler squares..the less triangled ones, loL!!

I bought the quilters newsletter last week in it is a formula for cutting your squares to make into triangles with a rotary cutter. I thought I would share and it might help someone.

Do You Know the Magic Number?

All you need are three magic numbers to rotary cut the main shapes we use to make patchwork blocks

To cut squares and rectangles add 1/2" to the finished size of the shape.

To cut two half-square triangles from a square, add 7/8 " to the finished size of the short side of the triangle Cut the square on the diagonal. Cut triangles this way when they form the corners of a block and you want the straight grain to run along the short sides.

To cut four quarter-square triangles from a square, add 1 1/4" to the finished size of the long side of the triangle. Cut the square on diagonals. Cut triangles this way when the long side of the triangle is parallel to the edges fo the block.

I have not done triangles yet and thought this was great information so wanted to share with anyone else out there who may be wanting to try some triangles.

Thanks Scrambles and Chevy, that is only 1 of the 10 pups I have here at the moment.

Chevy I sure hope you find your pups soon the weather is sooooo cold. Try calling local vets and pet businesses and feed mills and see if anyone found them.

Can someone fill me in on the baby blocks, I must of missed the posts about them.

Scrambled do you think Marlin will like those blocks LOL. I didn't think they would be loud enough but I am a trying LOL.

Chevy----My birthday isn't until may so that will give you plenty of time to get started on a pale yellow and white quilt.

It is gorgeous!!!! You done a fabulous job. I know that granma will love it always.

Have a question... if the pattern says, cut squares 2 1/2" then cut diagonal to make two half square triangles. ANd your supposed to add 1/2 inch or whatever... why dont they just say cut 3" squares?? lol

Then it wouldn't be so mind boggling for you and you wouldn't get to ask us.

You don't want it to be to easy, do ya?

Actually? Yes! Why is there such a major importance on trying to make simple things impossible? I totally get that rocket science is hard for normal dweebs, but cutting fabric? Since when did it go from pioneer ladies riding in a wagon working on blankets and curtains for the new log home, to pi times the square root of the hypothical distance to the moon? Just to figure out what size square you should have cut the first time, so that your angles match good? lol

Assuming it's a pattern from a good source, the directions you gave should be just like they sound, no adding any size to that. It used to be -higher math- when you wanted to modify a pattern to make triangles that way. Nowadays, it's done for us (((THANK GOODNESS))) I've tried to do that in the way-back days, and wound up nearly screaming in frustration!! From the sound of that one, you should be good.

I finished AmyQuilts quilt square!

It isn't what I wanted to do initially, but I don't think it turned out to badly for my first ever quilt square.
