2010 HomeMade Chicken Incubator Contest - Win $20 Gift Cert. Ends 9/12

Update on my hatch, I had a broody hen who lost all her eggs to a rat snake before I caught it,
So when my incubator went on lockdown I set 6 of the eggs under her and she hatched one so I took the other two from the bator and gave them to her she seemed to be real happy about taking them in.

So the end result of the maiden voyage of the Iron Hen was 3 chicks I don't know why the other eggs died so late I open them all and they looked to have died when I put them on lockdown,

Still happy about the results at least I know the incubator works, I'm going to make a couple adjustments to it and set the next run starting on Thur or Fri, and see how round two goes :)

So this in my entry page for the contest:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=48473

This is an updated post showing the steps to build and the first hatch, Not a great % but it does work and I had several bugs to work out during which I believe caused the majority of the eggs to fail see my page for what I will change and do differently for the next run

This is my first attempt at building an incubator and an egg turner I placed eggs in it on 6-21-10 so in 21 days I'll see how well the attempt went but I think I got it right, I did a lot of research on it before constructing I think it turned out well, Thanks for Viewing :)

I took a bit of time to make this wiring diagram for my Homemade Incubator I hope this is easy to underdstand and might help someone out, I made it in paint so forgive any thing not looking like it's to code :)

My first hatch!!

Second one the next day for three total so I know the Iron Hen Works I decided to place the chicks with my broody hen instead of in the brooder and she is doing well with them :)

I'm updating this to my contest page also, Thanks

This was useful I didn't know about editing the img thing I got my photos to work and then I couldn't I ended up clicking on the thumbs and simply coping and pasting the pictures where I wanted them, Now I can see them and as far as I know so can everyone else, I hope thats how they want it to look, Thanks for the info

The link to the thermostat modification you sent make sense to me I think I will have to do that for this next run and if anyone else wants to have a look at how it was done here's the link

Hello, here in the Netherlands the most people have vacation.
I am still working and have vacation soon.
How does your Incubator work Elwood? I am testing my incubator at this moment because the fan produces some heat and the temperature comes behind 103 degrees. I have improved the blades of the fan for more circulation and it seems it worked right now.
I will test the machine next week and maybe I will set some eggs after my vacation for testing the machine with eggs.

I have seen nice incubators here. Thanks all for sharing....Arie

It works well actually, I fixed a few issues I had with it during the first run so should improve the hatch rate, I'm waiting till the high temps of summer have passed to start another set of eggs in it should be a couple more weeks before the heat waves break and we get some cooler weather, Good Luck with your incubator, I hope all goes well for you
