2010 North/Central Washington Poultry Swap/Sale October 2, Ellensburg

If I were to attend a spring swap Monroe is too far for me to do in a day--especially April because North Cascades HWY will still be closed then...so that would be 5 hours one way...

Due to our colder weather, I don't start hatching until May so it would be June until I've have anything sexed & sorted to swap...

I also was wondering if anyone wanting to go in on some IDEAL or Sandhill orders with me for next spring shipment...

Thanks!

~Heather

Heather-we sure want you to come if you can! How about in early to mid-May? You may not have a lot hatched or sexed by then, but maybe you could still join us? Maybe you will have hatching eggs and newbie chicks? Does the Hwy open by then?

I may be interested in going in on some orders with you if we were going to meet at the swap.

Otherwise it is a bit of a drive.

PS I PMed you.

Daze333 - I have no idea about the feed store as I have yet to contact them. If you want to do that, it would be awesome! Get the details about what they offer and how to order, please and thank you.

Ok, I called the feed store and he says he puts in his orders in mid January for the whole season. He says to contact him then and he will send me an e-mail showing what he has ordered and we can reserve them. He orders from 4 hatcheries but he says they are good quality birds. The time he will have the most variety of birds will be end of May. Maybe we should plan the swap for then?
He still has chicks from this year and has sold 16,000 chicks so far this year!! Sounds great!

If the breeds that the feed store is selling that they say 'win',.. and are not hatchery, I know *exactly* who they come from. She raises cochins (she has taken national in the past, and large shows), mille fleurs, silkies, showgirls. The feedstore gets her extra boys and culls.

Are you guys talking about the Monroe feed store?

I'm pretty sure those are either IDEAL or MCMURRAY just based on the breeds I saw there last spring after the show. I went in there & looked at all of the bins. Most were what I'd expect...poorly conformed chicks with the wrong leg color, the wrong combs, white feathers where there shouldn't be, a couple dead, flattened/trampled chicks, etc, etc.

There were Creves in the back room (lots of them left) and most had white feathers. I saw a bin with a few BLRW (the three or four left had with single comb and/or the wrong leg color), other rare breeds (I think there were Brabanters, too?) lots of EE's oh and Brahmas! I do remember seeing some Cochins but noticing grey or green legs??? So I passed those up.

I also found some Cayugas ducklings and turkeys. I was tempted on the Cayugas (been there, had them but I miss them) but every duckling I picked up had white on the chest. Sighs.

Overall, I did not see anything that was up to my near impossible to meet standards, so I passed. I figure it costs just as much to feed a cull as it does a nice example of the breed that's not a waste of space/feed/time and that's not going to do anything good for the future of their breed.
