Some of the things I find while I cruise the net instead of watching basketball on TV

The Little Bustard Tetrax tarda Is a declining bird in Europe and a very rare vagrant to the UK. The French name for this species translates as "Farting Chicken", which seems quite appropriate when you hear them calling.

Maybe I will get some T Shirts made for the “save the little bustard” movement....

I want to do my part and hatch some little bustards! I'm just afraid the eggs would explode!

More fun bird names – The Great Bustard

The Avis Tarda is huge a bird is possibly the heaviest living flying animal. It also arguably the most sexual dimorphic extant bird species, in terms of the size difference between males and females. The heaviest verified specimen, collected in Manchuria, was about 21 kg (46 lb). At an average of 4.4 kg (9.7 lb), the females are roughly one-third the weight of the male. Once covered I am sure the hen says: “get off me you Great Bustard”

In this species, the male has a flamboyant display beginning with the strutting male puffing up his throat to the size of a football. He then tilts forwards and pulls his head in so that the long whiskery chin feathers point upwards and the head is no longer visible. He next cocks his tail flat along his back, exposing the normally hidden bright white plumage then he lowers his wings, with the primary flight feathers folded but with the white secondaries fanning out. A bit of a cocky Great Bustard as well IMO
