Hi 8Geese!ES Emus what do you feed them and how much do they eat? Also i have 40 acres all of which is fenced with 4 ft woven "farm & ranch" fence( 6 inch squares) that is 1 ft off the ground making it 5 ft high, is that high enough? If not i have an 8 acre bottom
pasture that i can redo. I was thinking of getting a couple chicks to raise and wanted to ask before i got them so i know what to expect and what i need to change.
Thanks
Everybody has their own way of doing it. We feed our adult birds two pounds of pelleted ratite or similar non-medicated grower/finisher food each per day. Beginning in the late summer/early fall, we increasingly mix a breeder/layer pellet into their diet. Chicks up to 3 weeks of age should have a constant supply of a crumbled ratite starter or similar avian non-medicated starter food, plus we chop up collard greens to suppliment their vitamin/mineral intake. After 3 weeks, we feed the chicks twice a day all they can eat in a 20 minute period. A 5' fence is sufficient, a 6' fence is even better! I recommend a fence that stretches all the way to the ground. Emus are curious birds and I can picture them getting stuck under the fence gap!
