2014 breeding season begins, post your results

Hi kathy ,I need your help again :hit , this is the first time we have a peahen laying eggs and she's free range so she made her nest out in the woods my question is : can I get the eggs and put them inside the coop? and would the peahen seat on them back again or not ? My husband said they wont like humans touching her eggs and they will not seat on them again ,I am worry about my dogs eating the eggs because they were eating the chicken eggs and they already found the peahen on her nest .thanks

Not to change the subject here but everyone see what weathers coming eastward tonight out of the great plains? Winds 70 plus mph, hail 2-3" in size and heavy rains. I tried all day to locate a portable generator but no luck. Incubator has 3 trays overstuffed with pea eggs(close to 260 eggs) and if we lose power for 5-6 hours no hatch a longs for weeks. Just put 4 taupe eggs in Sunday nite from last weeks egg laying too. I'm dreading this!!

Last year I accidentally pulled a good egg from my incubator instead of the clear one I meant to pull. I did this around 3pm, the next morning around 4am I candled my eggs and discovered I still had the clear in the bator, the good egg was sitting beside it waiting to be thrown out. Hated to do it, but I candled it as well and saw movement. I stuck it back in and crossed my fingers, it had sat in a 70 degree house for 13 hours, so I wasn't all that optimistic. She hatched beautifully, but 12 hours later than the others, she is one of my purple hens. I have a back up genny, but if I didn't I think I would throw some quilts over the bator to help hold in warmth and you might not lose as many as you think.

When I candled them it didn't make sense. Reason why is because the first egg look like it would be about another week before hatching but the second looked like it was going to hatch within 3 to 4 days and the 3 was going to hatch in 2 weeks. 1st egg and 3rd egg seemed correct but the second it was huge and it's only been there for only 3 weeks, it was bigger then the first.

Have some blankets ready, if the power goes out cover them bators up with lots of blankets leaving an air hole somewhere, this will keep them warm for a long time as long as you do not uncover them, if the eggs are far enough along even cooled for hours they most likely will be ok, can't tall ya how many times i have pulled eggs the guineas left behind for one to two days even over night and they still hatch , all of them hatch.

I just never can bring myself to leave them even though i don't need nor want any more guineas at this time as they will be harder to move, but i guess the family and the dogs will eat good

Just sold AugeredIn some more eggs. He said so far he is hardly getting plain peachicks from my eggs like what I thought he would get. He hatched a white, some dark pied, split, and he said he even hatched a pretty pied peachick.

Unfortunately the chicks he is hatching from me are small and weak so he said I need to up the protein more. This is my first year taking all of the eggs away so I guess I am not used to loading them up with so much protein. Hopefully giving them extra of certain foods like catfish chow will help!

AugeredIn said the pied chick won't stand and he has been working with it trying to get it to gain strength. I really hope it pulls through!

Sorry about that AugeredIn but I am glad you knew what the issue is because now I can fix it and hopefully the next batch of eggs you get from me will be better.

Anyways AugeredIn said he would stop being lazy and get photos of the peachicks so everyone bother him for photos.

Moving her will stop her from brooding . the sent of a human will not stop a peahen from sitting, i exchange eggs with my hens all the time, i got a few of them gonna be hatching out goslings soon, i wonder how that will go.

I would [pull the eggs and set them under a broody or place them in the incubator if you have one, sounds like you are gonna loose the eggs to your dogs or worse a preditor

One of my hens on her goose eggs.
