2014 New York Chickenstock

Rose of Sharon are not stellar for bees - they develop VERY late in the season - you may even think the thing died over the winter it is so late to leaf and flower out - good if you want some spring light to shine through it to others in the springs and use as shade in the hotter months.

Also - they do NOT seedling or seed true to color -and the blue-ish purple almost never has the color come back in the offspring - so just be aware as you plant you most likely will get white flowers.

I put the rose of sharon against my barn on the west side - so in the spring when everyone like more light and heat - they are barely starting ... and in the summer when everyone wants shade and cool - they are leafed out and starting to flower.

Lapeerian - I will take a pic of the halter and all my horse stuff and post next week ... I don't have anyone interested in them yet - so won't take unless there is interest - you don't HAVE to buy if you touch it and decide it is not for you - but if no one is slightly interested - I've got too much else to bring to fiddle with it :)

So will post it all up early next week for all you all to mull over.

I did not know some of this though mine are from seedlings of two bushes given me they are pretty just the same. You are right about the late start and I have thought they died more than once since my currants, raspberries and jostaberries are green.

A thought though is that they may not be that hard to start from cuttings?

cuttings I don't know about - but if you leave a little around the bush - the seeds will start up - and they are easy to pull up once they are started -a sure way to make sure the seeds are hardy and viable.

Yes - very pretty - they just have some odd behavior so you want to place them correctly and NOT pull them some spring thinking they died !

I have 3 barred rock cross boys available if anyone wants them. Dad is a rir and moms are barred rocks. These boys look like barred rocks. I may have more boys up for grabs if anyone wants them. These will be hatchery red boys and a couple of heritage rir boys. They are turning 4 weeks old tomorrow. If nobody wants them I have empty canning jars with their names on them.

Yes I think of the Rose Of Sharon as a summer Tree / bush . I like that they dont bloom the same time as lilacs .
Ive given the seedlings away ...not sure what color the babies are ...I did start some by our stream...but the town cut them all down ..so I never saw them bloom

yes a couple of Rose of Sharons
