2015 August hatch-a-long!!

How do you know if a hen has gone broody. My girls are still too young to lay eggs but when they get older I d dad want to use them to hatch eggs

A broody hen will sit on her nest all day and night except for around 10-20 minutes when they use the bathroom (huge and stinky!), eat and drink. When they get off the nest they walk in a funny manner, feathers ruffled, and their comb will be small and dull in color. They are protective of the eggs they are on, sit firmly on the nest, and will return there (usually) if removed.
Hens usually go broody in their first year, but it can take 6-8 months.

Best of luck!

I have set 7 guinea eggs and I'm at day 7. Hatch day should be mid August. I candled today and all looked good. My last hatch of guineas was under one of my broody chickens but pulled them on day 25 and finished in the incubator. All 7 hatched. We will see if the incubator can be as successful.

I can't wait for pictures! Waiting is so hard!

I hear that Dry Incubating increases hatching rates up to 100%, so I decided to give it a try. I slowly lowered the humidity in my incubator from 55% to around 45%. I hope that it makes a difference.

I have done dry incubation this time also. Ran between 35 and 40. Now trying to get it up to 60 for hatch.

Just set 1 Australorp egg, 1 Ameracauna egg and 1 Cochin egg under my broody Sumatra today! I'm really excited! I also placed an Ameracauna egg, an Easter egger egg, and two "surprise eggs" into the incubator. One surprise egg is brown and the other white.

Hi all! I have set 2 eggs in the bator and have 10 eggs shared between two chickens.
Day 2 today... There are a variety of eggs, blue, green, brown and light bay but not 100% sure on the breeds so will be an exciting surprise!
Good luck to all :)
