Coming out party this weekend for the Pea Palace gang. Was waiting till this round of severe weather passed thru last nite before moving them outside. Let the loud males calling begin!

The hen laid her egg tonight, but it was misshaped egg, i think i could open it and check for fertility.

I have collected 3 eggs this week and I think all from different peahens. I would have 5 eggs if it were not for the rats. I think they are what has eaten 2 eggs. All I found was a little bit of egg shell left and I doubt it is one of the peafowl doing it. We are definitely going to get rid of the rats.

Most of the eggs I am finding under the roost, but someone has noticed the fake egg I put in the dog box because I keep finding eggs in there. Soon I will be taking this week's eggs and incubating them.

See that thing that looks like a crack? Might be a good idea to make sure she has access to a bowl of oyster shell.

Or crushed egg shell. I never catch mine eating oyster shell but the peahens will eat egg shell out of my hand sometimes when they really need it.

I got my Mom into the habit of saving all egg shells from breakfast and giving them to me to give to the peahens. I would say it is working because this year the egg shells are definitely thicker and the egg quality on the inside is better as well.

We set fourteen pea eggs on the first of April. On day four I candled out one cracked perch bomb. Today on day ten I candled and removed one clear and another perch bomb. Four of six perch bombs were good and a total of eleven developing eggs out of fourteen eggs!

Today I set twelve under two broody hens and another eight in the incubator. In a little over two weeks I should be changing diapers, er, wood chips.

What kind of grit, I think most of the "Grit" is crushed rock and will help them process and digest feed, but will not provide calcium which they need for egg laying. We provide grit year round, but oyster shell only during laying season.
