2015 breeding season

I forgot to take a picture of the eggs I candled. The first 4 are at 2 weeks tomorrow. I candled them and I'm not sure what to think. I can see the air sac plain as day at the top of the egg it looks good in my opinion. The rest of the egg is pitch black until I turn the light towards the narrow tip and then it lights up more of the egg. I was wondering what does a dead egg look like candled? I hope the 4 eggs aren't dead.

You may need a brighter light, but what I look for is movement.

I'll use one of my eggs as an example

I wouldn't be too worried. Since I got worried recently that Snow White was egg bound and I started reading a lot on egg binding, it seems that you should really be concerned if they are lying down a lot or can't stand and they just keep moving their tail up and down. Then that is when you need to help. So far what your hen looks like seems normal but just keep an eye on her behavior and if she is eating like normal.

The other day Ice looked a little egg bound. She was supposed to lay an egg the day before but hadn't. I was watching her then I went off to get their food and feed them and the next time I looked she had an egg under her. I then realized it was an abnormal egg. It had no shell just a thin casing. I need to find and copy that chart that Kathy posted recently showing different egg abnormalities and the causes of them.

I think I have noticed a connection with the grass in the pen dying and the egg production going down. I tried re-seeding with a summer grass but that grass did not take at all, so hopefully soon I will be trying a new kind of summer grass. Sid of Texaspeafowl did tell me that I would see an improvement in breeding results if I got grass in the pen. Now I am going to try planting millet in there I think.

I will be worry my female just die and looked a lot like ger

My peahen is fine now. She layed the egg. She's laying every other day again. Sorry for your loss

Sorry I have been busy with college work that is why I wasn't replying. On page 64 when you first said you thought your peahen was sick or egg bound that was 6 days ago so in that time did you give her calcium, try worming her, or carefully catch her to see if she was egg bound or put her in a warm, steamy room? The article Kathy posted in reply to your comment on that page was one of the topics I read when I was worried about egg binding and it has lots of good information. You can also search the internet for treating egg binding.

While I said not to be too worried I was replying to Birdrain on page 61, and he said his peahen laid the egg and is doing well. I did also say to keep an eye on her for the signs of egg binding and to watch to see if she was eating, etc. Certainly be worried if you see them not eating, acting sickly, etc I was not saying to never be worried.
This year I have seen some of my peahens look like Birdrain's peahen in the photos and the next day they would be fine and I would find the egg they laid. The day I see them with their tail up I make sure there are multiple sources of calcium out in the pen for them - crushed egg shell, oystershell, and small parrot grit with calcium. Snow White was looking funny for a few days and she was laying down a lot. I wasn't sure if she was egg bound or just feeling sick so I treated her and watched her and gave her calcium. She recovered and all my other peahens have been doing well.

Sage didn't lay last night (I'm not worrying she's done this before just have to keep an eye on her) and this morning I watched Colbolt fan up and then Sage walked up near him and she was submissive and she was bred within a few seconds of him fanning without her playing hard to get. Could she have missed last night because she had not been bred for a while.
