2015 breeding season

I saw my first successful mating today. e   It was Fred and the Pied hen I have in with him this year. Unfortunately I am still rather sick and cannot kick this sinus infection, so I witnessed it out the window. I am on my second type of antibiotics now and I am hoping this one actually works, as this is miserable. I received 2 eggs in the mail yesterday, unfortunately one has a rolling air cell and the other is loose, not too hopeful.  They were shipped from in state, but obviously handled roughly.

Send AugeredIn a PM he has a good way of dealing with shipped eggs that have messed up air cells.

I hate Sinus issues. It is a big one from my Bronze BS hen, who is penned with a White Male, I am hoping she let him cover her, every time I feed she chases him away from the food dish, so she is pretty dominant.

By the way, my friend has a peahen laid soft shell egg last month, after that she laid another eggs and they were fertile, and one hatched today, i thought i should tell you about it

I have a lovely Pied hen who lays about 30 eggs a year and has never shown any interest in sitting on any of them. Before I got an incubator I used to throw away old eggs by the bucket load. Not all hens go broody.

That take alot of room if you keep your birds penned and some hens will never sit a day in their lives , some folks got snake problems and they would lose eggs if they left them to long, some folks don't want or need any more peafowl , it is a personal choice, i have all i need i sell their eggs and hatch what don't sell within a few days of collection, my blue peafowl and guinea are paying for my green peafowl and that is good enough reason to take all the eggs and replace them with decoys until their last clutch, i will let them sit them if they choose, some have but many have not

We are greedy, evil people and want to make egg laying slaves of the poor helpless birds.

Seriously, if you are happy with six to ten peachicks per year then let the broody hens raise their chicks. If you need the birds to help pay for their keep, take the eggs and either sell them or raise the chicks. The birds are not assentient beings they don't know or really care.

Many of us are much more capable of raising the chicks than the birds are. We can feed, medicate, and watch over them keeping them safe where they would normally fall prey to predators if they were left with the hens.

Personally, I just like that confused look they get as they run around looking for that egg they so LOVINGLY dropped from the 5' perch onto the concrete floor the night before.

Peacock12, indeed some hens are not good broodies. I am trying the natural approach with letting my species this year hatch their own eggs out since I feel the chicks in some cases with a good mother do much better. Some peahens just randomly lay eggs and don't even use a nest spot. What I did last year was let the peahens go broody for the second clutch and only one did and raised some nice chicks. The year before I had a free range peahen go broody and raise chicks. It's personal preference. Each way has its pros and cons.
