2015 breeding season

Hey everyone, one of my friends in the duck forum was asking me about hatching pea eggs, so I told her to come over her and ask away.

Edited to add:
She's hatched tons of chickens and Call Ducks, so she does have plenty of incubating experience.

Oh my! Congrats!

I just put 3 eggs under my broody yesterday in the coop, went out today and silly broody left that nestbox for another.

No wonder I try to put silly broodys in a pet carrier and watch them! Grrr. Put them under my old faithful and will check in morning.

I also have an India blue hen sitting out in the field next to us. I sure miss being sble to rare range my hens and letting my dog patrol.

If I feel able I will need to go round her up when the weather gets dry, I do pray she is ok.

Lily is getting bigger and showing some Purple on the wings. (?) Tomorrow she will have some company, five have hatched out tonight, one more has pipped and four more are going to hatch over night.

At this age you can't see the purple on a black shoulder chick, not before 5 or 6 months.

ETA: are you sure its purple? It could be cameo.

Father is Purple, so if it is a female it should be purple, correct? I do agree that you will not be able to see the "Purple" for awhile yet. All BS chicks get those pinkish wing heathers as far as I know.

Correct, i hate dealing with black shoulder chicks, last week nine chicks hatched, three cameo bs, three cameo bs w/e and three bronze bs chicks. I mixed them by mistake, now i will need to wait at least 6 months to tell them apart

I'm guessing you will see the difference in the Bronze BS chicks sooner than 6 months, they should get much darker speckled color than the Cameos do. As for telling Cameo BS from Cameo BS W/E, I wish you the best of luck. I don't know if 6 months will be long enough for that.

q8peafowl,,most all my birds are b/s as well. That's why I made my own hatcher with separate compartments to keep chicks separated until I can get them identified and marked using 4" long colored zip ties which I put on their legs. Some colors only gets a tie on one leg, other colors gets a zip tie on each leg. You have to keep an eye on them as the chick grows but after about a month I wingband them and cut the ties off.

Yeah bronze bs are easy to tell early, i remember i put the leg bands on cameo bs chicks first, so hopefully if i'm mistaken between bronze bs and cameo bs w/e chicks i could tell which are which after 2 months.

I do have a hatcher with separate compartments, i made the mistake after bringing them outside the hatcher, that's a good idea to use two legs bands for some colors instead of two, i will be careful with next week hatch!

Ratz! I thought that the two BS I raised last year had a darker tint to the wing feathers, maybe that was later... Oh well, I'll just keep dreaming.
