2015 breeding season

Had a 'sticky' chick hatch the other day that when I found it in the hatcher it had been stuck on its back to the floor for a few hours. When I would upright the chick it would push itself over onto its back again, it just could not stay right side up and its toes were curled tight. So I made shoes for it and put it in the 'burrito'.



It didn't look very happy about that, but the next day it looked to be much improved.



Later that day I took off the snowshoes and all the toes but one were pretty normal looking.



It is running about with its clutch mates now and the only difference I can see is it is the runt of the litter, just a little smaller than the rest.
It is out of an IBBS split Cameo cock over a Cameo hen, it looks Cameo to me.

I been lurking here for a while looking at the pretty pretty pictures Kathy... But DAng It looks like they drove a forklift over that box.

IF i ever ship eggs I am going to get pvc pipe the right size for two eggs and cut it the depth of the box. Then stuff each egg group in each pipe whith High desity foam caps top and bottom to protect the bubble wrapped eggs ... That way they CAN drive a forklift over it... Just joking... but DANG.

So what the box would look like would be a wine rack with all the pipes loaded in there...

I used to design packaging for stuff almost as delicate as eggsies. There is even a single use impact gauge you can get to tape on the outside of the box to tell how far it was dropped or impact.

some people are packing eggs in these or the ones that have a full on split to slip over pipe but the halves of the splt have double sided tape on them. Simple to cut a length pack a couple of eggs in there with a bit of isulation between them so they dont or cant ever touch. then insulation between the ends and he box. something like this would slip into a pVC pipe pretty nicely.


The key with shipping delicate product is to allow the material to move yet not let it absorb the impact...

the egg shape itself is a wonder of mechanical strength.... Take a regular egg out of the refrigerator apply the same amount of force on it all over and it will amaze you.... let that force build up on a single point.... breakage.

Don't get too eggcited, I just hatched a malpositioned chick on day 32. It is in the burrito baking in the oven - er, hatcher. It will probably go to the brooder tomorrow. It really must as I have another 13 hatching on the 24th. I set over five dozen last night.

I wouldn't be too worried. Since I got worried recently that Snow White was egg bound and I started reading a lot on egg binding, it seems that you should really be concerned if they are lying down a lot or can't stand and they just keep moving their tail up and down. Then that is when you need to help. So far what your hen looks like seems normal but just keep an eye on her behavior and if she is eating like normal.

The other day Ice looked a little egg bound. She was supposed to lay an egg the day before but hadn't. I was watching her then I went off to get their food and feed them and the next time I looked she had an egg under her. I then realized it was an abnormal egg. It had no shell just a thin casing. I need to find and copy that chart that Kathy posted recently showing different egg abnormalities and the causes of them.

I think I have noticed a connection with the grass in the pen dying and the egg production going down. I tried re-seeding with a summer grass but that grass did not take at all, so hopefully soon I will be trying a new kind of summer grass. Sid of Texaspeafowl did tell me that I would see an improvement in breeding results if I got grass in the pen. Now I am going to try planting millet in there I think.

My yearling female looked the same a couple days ago but now she looks really sick I think something is wrong with her ;( she can't hardly walk and don't want to eat I don't know what to do ;( she was laying then her mom took over her 3 eggs she had lay and now mom is sitting on them ;(

I need help my yearling female was laying eggs in the nest I build for her and I think she lay about 3 to 4 eggs and the her mom diocese to start laying in her nest and she lay about 5 now she is sitting on them and my yearling female was gonna lay another egg a few days ago but she never did now she looks really sick I don't know what's going on ;( she can't hardly walk
