I've used vegetable oil, coconut oil would work just fine. You'd just want to be sure it's in a readily spreadable state.

Today is Spina Bifida Awareness Day..I have a son that was born with this birth defect.

Do they test for this before birth? what causes this? I have so many kids and I cant even remember what causes it! I remember you sharing his handsomeness before, I think its so thoughtful that you share your story with us!

Oh noes! Has it ever gotten any of your birds?

Really? How do you keep the birds from the dogs or are they raw fed & allowed to free range? When I move I'm planning on raising birds & bunnies to feed the dogs. I'm hoping it'll be healthier than the chickens I buy now for them.

If chickens fly into the dogs area they are gotten. dogs have a fenced area, chickens have their own runs and coop areas and kids have an area between both lol

So I'm down to one egg left, hopefully it'll last to hatch like my little chick!

Lavender Ameraucana is peeping! No external pip. I candled the Brabanters and guessing one, if not both are DIS. Locked them down anyway. My investment is down to possibly one hatched chick. Patience....

I just use water--I try to let them get out on their own and if I have dry membranes I try to figure out what went wrong with incubating them--Dry membranes are not normal at all.

they dont look like alarms to me at the moment? but then again, looking over at mine...... three are upsidedown on the couch and two are under the kitchen table snoring lol


and I think I hear little luke snoring behind my chair at the incubator too! yay!!! the cheep cheeping put him to sleep! or the fan motor! lol time for mom to look now!

Correct, not normal. I had a really porous old LG that would not hold humidity, and ended up with turkey poults with dry membranes. I got rid of the incubator afterward but during that hatch, oil helped the ones that were trapped by an overlarge, overdrawn air cell.

There, did my bit for Spina Bifida. I was big into it back in the 80's. I helped get Oct. become Spina Bifida month back then, and I got the newspapers to write an article about it every yr...with a photo of him.. they loved seeing his progress every yr. Anyone expecting..or going to try and become pregnant? Please, take your prenatal vitamins! Eat your leafy greens. After I helped with a 5 yrs. study, this is what they came to as to what will steer you clear of this birth defect.

I did not know. Thanks for sharing this. He is quite the handsome man and talented too. I have a friend who's daughter has SB. She was expected to live very long but she is a fighter and has just graduated from High School.

Love these dogs! Had a neighbor that had them. Very sweet .. big..dogs!
