2017 Groundhog Day Hatch-a-long!

Hello Everyone!!! The last year of chicken keeping has been a hectic one for me!!! All sorts of ups and downs! I was going to join in on the NYE hal but my hens weren't laying well and I couldnt find any hatching eggs in time

BUT the girls finally picked back up enough for me to snag some spare ones for hatching.

I am planning to set my eggs in the incubator the night of the 23rd hoping for Valentines babies. So far I have a dozen idk what Ill have by then, not going to fill the incubator but thats ok, honestly I probly already have enough chickens lol! But we do have another coop set up now so Im excited and hoping for a better year of chicken keeping!!

I will be hatching my own production type rhode island reds, and this will be my first time using a incubator I didnt make-I even have an egg turner this time

Hey teaton! Welcome! I had a similar slow down with my chicken's laying, but it's gradually getting better. I wasn't planning to incubate eggs right now, but I bid on some on a whim, and won.

I just finished the 14 day candling, and all the eggs look great! So there are 8 shipped, self-blue Silkies, 4 of my Silkie, Snowball's and 8 assorted SF, EE, SLW and Cochin.

Thats Awesome!!! Sounds like you scored some nice breeds, I cant wait to see what you hatch out, probly some real beauties! Im afraid my poor gals have been tricked by the good old TN weather weve been in the high 50s to mid 60s for almost 2 weeks now, its gonna get into the 70s this weekend but then winter will be back around here and Im sure they will slow down again, so Im taking advantage of the situation! lol

Cuz, don't be intimidated by blue eggs. I've been able to see them, and if you have a decent candler you'll be able to as well! The only ones that kept me guessing were BCMs. Good luck with your hatch!

I'm not too worried about them, I actually don't even have blue egg lsyers yet, but I hope to get Cream Legbars and BCM's this year. My technique will get better with time, I hope.

Thanks for the comments, guys, I feel fairly certain the first one is infertile, but I won't remove it unless it stinks. Right now it all smells fine.

Aww, man, I thought light blue eggshells would be easier....:p Whatever, Ayam Cemanis then. LOL Maybe Icelandics. (I'm into the rare breeds)

Still go ahead and hatch some if you fancy them! Just remove any stinkers as you go along- it's quite fun having the surprise of chicks hatching......
