2018 Nankin Bantams Discussion

I’m having a population explosion this month. 😃
Have had hatches the last 3 weeks.
Four more eggs still in the incubator to hatch this Thurs/Fri.

AND one of the hens finally went broody. She’s amassed 12 eggs.
i think I’ll be pulling some inside to the incubator to help finish them.

I hadn't seen any wiggling for a while, and hadn't heard any peeps, so I candled the three remaining ones--there was no movement. So I opened a hole to get a look. They had all passed. One was malpositioned, another hadn't absorbed the yolk, and the last looked perfect, they just didn't pip for some reason. That rotten egg that cracked and oozed a little must have done more damage than I thought...only 2 out of 12 Crevecouer eggs I had in there too hatched, and they were on the side that had the bad egg. :/ There's definitely a down side to being too nervous to candle!

Well, 5 is good! it’s always frustrating when they quit so close to the end. I candle at 4-5 days to check for veins, and then weekly after that to keep look for movement and development.

If they’re in lockdown and I’m seeing no progress, I make it real quick, take one at a time, and when I’m done, i mist the incubator with a real fine water-sprayer to get the humidity back up quickly and close it. Watching the gauge, I’ve noticed doing that recovers the overall humidity quicker than when I don’t mist.

Sorry to hear.

Yeah I misted every time I opened it up. The humidity might have been a bit too high at the beginning because several of the air sacs were a bit on the small side. I still got babies though, so it's not a total loss! Hopefully I've got at least one of each sex.
