Hey guys so we got our chicks and ducklings early. They all seemed lively. I did the beak dip and then checked them for pasty butt. My 3 cayugas had it bad. Once I finally got the poop off they just exploded with poop. I can't believe they had that much in them. Now they are all lethargic. Im so worried. I gave them sugar water which they drink a little. I got their temp right around 95°F. I don't know how to start my own thread on here yet. The leghorns are doing great, but my heart is breaking for my cayugas!
Any advice?
Did you ever get any answers? Duckies pull through?
I'm afraid I'm not much help, this is my first chick experience and so far no pasty butts

Waiting paintantly until April. I have almost all my supplies except for the bedding. Still not sure if I want aspen or pine bedding...

Sorry I figured out how to make a thread. I did get help, thank you. We lost 2 of the ducklings. The last one made it through the night and looks better. I called cackle hatchery and they said that when they were hatched they must not have expelled all the poop and so when they were shipped and got pasty butt it just clogged then up too much. They are sending us 3 more for free and they should get here on the 23rd of March. We are thinking of naming the survivor Rocky, since he is a fighter.

Just ordered my chicks! A semi-local hatchery does chick days on the weekends at different farm stores and I'll pick up my girls on Saturday! After lots of contemplation I decided on 2 Barred Rock, 2 Golden Laced Wyandotte, and 2 Rhode Island Reds. I'm so excited! :wee:celebrate:yesss::ya:woot
So exciting!! The Wyandottea are so pretty! We almost got RIRs but my husband likes the greens and blues in the Black Australorps

lol my husband is pretty "over" this chicken thing already... I asked him what kind of chickens to get and he said "brown ones" lol!
 Oh, husbands! I showed mine tons of different breeds that are good layers and he would only pick out the ones HE thinks are pretty! Every time I showed him a new one and said, “this is a pretty hen”, he’d say let’s get those BAs, those are cool. :idunno But, “brown ones” is pretty open to interpretation, I think you can basically get any chickens you want!

When DH picked up mine he was so confused. I told him everything we needed. I may as well have been speaking in tongues! Then I had him name off all the kinds they had. Each time he listed one I told him the egg size, egg color, temperament, and size. "Oh just pick 4 damn chickens!" We got 2 barred rocks and 2 Easter Eggers. (Labled as Americaunas...but we all know how that goes ;) )

That’s too funny! We were at a feed store and told by multiple employees that a bunch of chicks they had were true Ameraucanas, but that they were also Easter Eggers, but that they were sure they’re Ameraucanas because they laid non-white/brown eggs. Needless to say, we didn’t buy them because we had no idea what they truly were (probably not Ams or EEs :lau)
