Yeah if I've learned one thing on this site its that there is no one correct way to do anything.
Everyone has preferences, and for the most part, everyone's methods work.
Thats what I love- being able to become educated enough to make my own informed decision.

Also check out this dust bathing extravaganza! (In the shavings, because they haven't yet figured out that the sand is much better for that...)

Definitely true. We went in specifically for meat chickens that we could breed and keep going. The guy recommended CX and told us we would need to breed them with a CX roo to keep the line going. I understand you can breed the CX but it's so very difficult. I'm glad we went back after researching and bought a larger variety of breeds because if we did have only CX it's very unlikely we would've been able to breed them. Now looking at my CX I'm not so sure they're CX afterall. I hope not because a short life of 8 weeks seems so sad!

I don't know much about meat birds. I looked into it a bit just out of curiosity but I'm in the city so only 4 hens allowed and "no slaughtering"
While I would love to produce my own meat I guess I'll skip that for now :p

Yes we didn't either. Haha. But I posted over on the breed board and definitely not Cornish cross in our squad. I'm pretty relieved! We are from rural Texas and there's all kinds of livestock in city limits. We have a population of around 200 I believe. So the animals probably outnumber us. Haha.

We always said if we get in the country we would have a variety of colors and sizes in chicks. Well we got our country home and picked out 4 guineas and 11 chicks. Now we have 2 guineas(2we gave to a neighbor who really wanted guineas) and 9 chooks left after a coyote, racoon and owl incident. We now bought 6 morechicks from tsc and have enjoyed the whole experience.

Hello, I am completely new to raising chickens. I ordered 15 chicks that will be arriving mid-April. My sons and I are super excited! We are getting the coop ready this month and are planning to brood in the coop. We live in a rural farming community and have lots of room so our chickens will be semi-free range. The BYC forums are helping a lot!
