2018 Newbie Chat!

I wish I had known before getting mine too. I’m going to sell her this year as I’m really not impressed with the breed. For being the “friendliest” breed out there, mine is just an awful bird. I had a lavender Orp that I culled in the summer. I’ll never get another barred rock or Orpington ever again. Australorps and Welsummer are my favorite breeds now. Hardy, great egg layers. Non confrontational, lowest in the pecking order, and great confined or free ranged. I hope yours pulls through.
How strange, my Orp (Roo) isn't anything like you describe, she actually fits the description you've given of your A's and W's and she is very friendly too.

Here in the U.S, hatcheries destroy the SOP (standard of perfection) the only way to get a chicken that fits it’s discription is to go to breeders. I’m sure your Orp is way closer to the SOP than mine is.

My sick Orpington may not survive the night.
I took it out of the brooder to check it and noticed some pasty diarrhea so I took it in to clean it up.
As I was doing that I noticed the chick has some sort of scab on it’s abdomen.
I think it might have an infected umbilical.

She’s so very weak. I can tell she hasn’t eaten all day. Empty crop.
I gave her a couple of drops of Nutri Drench.

Three of my four are affected by the ducks gone. Pedro is very clingy wanting to be around us all the time, and when I'm indoors she sits under my bedroom clucking until either I or my daughter appear. Jellybean has become quite nervous and a bit flighty, (wasn't either of those before) and Roo who barely ever makes a sound now clucks loads unless either Lilah, me or my daughter is around - Roo used to hang out with the ducks loads everyday - Lilah is showing no signs of even noticing they're gone and isn't bothered at all.
After our hard work of segregating the two bullies with good results, it has all gone to pot since the ducks have been gone, they are back to attacking Roo again and the amount of attacks escalated to the point of my having to intervene for Roo's safety, however yesterday and today they behaved better and yesterday the four had a dust bath together, which they've never done before. Roo is finally learning how to read the signs and can tell when they are about to come after her so gets out of the way and often manages to avoid a beating, so I think we are getting there slowly but surely.

Awwwww poor little love, can see on your pics how poorly she is - hope with all my heart she pulls through.

Ugh there’s a mouse in the garage!
It was in the rabbit hutch.
No doubt eating spilled feed that’s been in there from when Pippin and Cleo were in it.
I should’ve cleaned it up :he
We’ll have to put out some traps or bait.
