2018 Newbie Chat!

Well unfortunately it didn’t work.
At least not with Bootsie.
So I’m going to put fertilized eggs under her if she’s still broody when the new coop is finished.
I’m not sure what to do with Mitzi.
She’s in the prefab bantam coop so it would be ideal if she adopted the bantam babies but I think they’re too old now.
I’m not sure about putting fertilized eggs under her because if the babies hatch the coop is raised and they could fall 2.5 feet to the ground if they tried to follow her out to the run.
It’s so hard trying to keep everyone in the place I want them to be.
Some of my LF still lay their eggs in the bantam coop.
I want to get a pet carrier to use as a broody nest and place it on ground level underneath the coop inside the run.
That way I can lock her and the chicks in there at night.
Plus they’ll be inside the enclosed locked run also.

Okay so I decided not to get the Bresse due to reviews regarding the hatchery they sourced the breeder birds from.

But I did get 4 more babies today! :ya

Two barred Rocks and two EE.

I put them with the other chicks.
Everyone seems to be okay except the bantams keep pecking at the barred Rocks faces and toes.
They seem fascinated by them because there weren’t any black chicks in the brooder with them at the TSC.

Tonight after dark I took Bootsie out of the coop and put her in the rabbit hutch in the garage.
I’m hoping she’ll adopt the LF chicks and hopefully Mitzi will take the bantams.
I’m not sure if it will work at all.
I haven’t tried to see if one of these broody girls will adopt chicks before.
Usually they say the chicks should be only a couple of days old.
And of course my surviving Buff Orpington is almost two weeks old now.
But she’s not that much bigger than the two EEs. The barred Rocks are smaller and still have their “egg tooth”.
I hope it works!:fl
Gorgeous beauties

I forgot how much these babies eat. To be fair they are scratching a lot.

Prince was crowing, a different kind of crow, got my attention. I went and checked on them and Rose had escaped. Rose is the EE. She is the escape artist out of the group. What was I thinking getting 2 more EE's?lol... They are fun birds. The cinnamon Queen is growing faster then the rest. All of them are roosting now--they are about 2 weeks.

Had a conversation with my son and he asked if I would be opposed to moving to Texas. I have been trying to talk them into Tennessee or Texas. I just want out of Illinois. Everything keeps going up up up--taxes are ridiculous. It wouldn't be for a few years, but it's an option. I will have to do my homework to find out about chickens laws, predators in the area and then figure out how to move with chickens. Chickens and fish are my two tough ones. I can't imagine moving a 125 gallon tank.
