2018 Newbie Chat!

Ta Dah!!! I went out to give them some greens and look what I found! I do have a ceramic egg in each nest box, you can't see it cause she fluffed everything up so much.

It's so tiny and cute!

Lol! I don't know whether to laugh or cry, ok, I'm laughing.

I went out to check the nest box this morning...there's Opal sitting in there looking at me like, "Can I have some privacy please??" I quietly closed the door and send an excited all caps text to my daughter: PEARL IS IN THE NEST BOX!!!! Then we go shopping as planned.

We come back, Pearl is out in the run...excitement growing, can't wait!! Open the door...No Egg. I can hear all of them laughing at me. I swear I did.

My daughter confirms that all of them have very red combs. All on the verge of laying...all holding off as long as they can so they have some amusement in their long winter confinement.

But I'll have the last laugh, they can't fool Mother nature forever!
:goodpost::yuckyuck Mine did that for up to a week before they laid, it's gotta be soon surely :woot :pop

Do you have fake eggs in the nest boxes?
Even golf balls will work.
You can also purchase fake ceramic eggs at feed stores etc.
Put one in each box.
I did that with my new covered “kitty litter” boxes I use as extra nests and they started laying in them too.
I tried those kitty litter boxes after seeing yours, but girls wouldn't use them. I wanted to relieve the pressure of three wanting to lay at the same time in the same nest but they are adamant they only want the favourite one. Roo isn't a problem as she uses a different nest.
I have the girls indoors at the moment, we are being hit by a storm and are on yellow warning (red is worst) - stupid here took the tarp off the sides of the run to let in more light thinking we'd be ok as usually by now we are over the worst but stupid here forgot about global warming and how the weather has gone crazy and with winds tossing garden furniture around as though it were paper, this morning I got them straight out of bed and brought them in with us, for their safety.
I no longer have the kitty boxes as having not been used was able to return them to the store - sooooooo are using a nest box we made out of cardboard for Roo when she was ill and needed a place to lay while indoors with us.
I put the egg in and while out the room I could hear the egg bring rolled around the room (we have laminate flooring) came in to find Pedro and Jellybean playing with it :he
Put one of Lilah's eggs in box that has worked in getting Lilah using it but Roo kept going over to her and shoving her out of the box not liking that she's in there and I'm assuming Roo thinks it's her box so I have Roo on my lap to keep her from disturbing Lilah who is at present trying to lay :rant
Soon as weather is better we will be attaching see through corrugated roofing to our run so we can have the sides tarp'd permanently without losing light.
Storm has been with us since weekend and so far weve been leaving our back door open so the girls can come in or go out as they please but today the storm is at its peak so we have them imprisoned till it dies down.
Lilah has laid her egg in thr box so hopefully the others will follow suit.

I'm pretty sure the egg is Pearl's. I'd be absolutely sure if I hadn't looked on the camera that day. 3 of them were on the roost, but not Opal. I couldn't find her on the run camera either. We were grocery shopping at the time so I couldn't go out to check. There are some corners in the coop that aren't shown on the camera and the run under the coop is not seen either so she could have just been hidden. But unusual that she wasn't roosting with them. And of course, I found the egg when we got home. It was warm too. Both Opal and Pearl are EEs so the color doesn't help either.

I'm going to move the camera a bit so I can see in the nest boxes. They're don't show up well because they're darker than the coop. I'm thinking I might be able to tell if Opal is in there anyway since she's white.

Would be so cool if you could find out, l really like that I know whose egg is whose - not that it really makes any difference, just is that I like knowing.

Oh yes, I want to find out! Chances are high that it's Pearl's since she is squatting like crazy. The weather here has finally taken a turn for the better. The snow is finally melting but since the ground is still frozen, the water isn't going anywhere. I can't wait to get them out of the run again. Then I can sit out with them and watch who goes in the coop. Supposed to be 60 degrees (15 C) today, Yay!!!
