OK, you're right - absolutely adorable! Thanks for sharing! Also, I love the idea of putting a dust bath box in the brooder - I would never have thought of that! I'm going to put one out for my girls this weekend. They are pretty much scared of ANYTHING that's new so it will be interesting to see how long it takes them to get in it. Have a nice day

One of our suspected cockerels will make this noise sometimes. I thought he was just screaming because he usually does it when he's fighting for pecking order rank and the other is being particularly aggressive and keeps going after him. I guess maybe he's trying to crow. Lol.

Hello Everyone - yep, another NEWBIE!!! So glad I found this thread. I'm sure it will be fun following everyone's NEW ADVENTURES. My husband and I have 3 polish girls who are now 8 weeks old. We bought a coop online, we painted and decorated it and my husband built a base to put it on so they have a little more room. We're going to give them a good sized run outside with their coop too (still designing that - this has turned into quite a labor of love! LOL). We decided to take our chicks out of their brooder box this week and have started them in the coop (which is still in the house) 2 weeks before they actually go outside so we can hopefully get them used to it and used to going up into their roost (I think that's what it's called) at night - and letting them out around 6am each morning. Fingers crossed that when they actually go outside they'll be pros at the COOP THING. I've attached a picture of their coop and them. LOVE LOVE LOVE MY CHICKS and love seeing everyone else's as well. Keep those pics coming!!

We put our 2 week old chicks in their coop and had to put them in by hand for the first week. Easter weekend we got home past sundown and found everyone inside the house already asleep. They'll pick it up in no time.

Squee!!! Oh my gosh I can’t believe you caught him on video. Frodo is such a perfect name for that little bantam! Every time I try to catch Wally crowing he looks at me so sternly like I’m throwing off his groove. I was told by my local farm and feed owner that roo’s won’t just crow when the sun comes up. Complete myth, they also crow when they see anything new!

I didn’t raise the food until a week ago (4 weeks old) because they were getting too many shavings in it.
Until then it hadn’t really been too much of a problem but it’s completely up to you.
It certainly won’t hurt.
I don’t want them eating the shavings.

I read an article once about the physiology of how roosters crow.
It said they have to fill up their air sacs and stretch their neck out to do it.
That’s how I knew it was a crow because it certainly doesn’t sound like one
He sounds like he’s trying to imitate an eagle
But that stretched neck gives it away because they really don’t do that with any other sounds.
My older roo, Hector, is a bantam Dark Brahma and he also started crowing very young.
I just didn’t remember exactly how old he was.
I wonder if that’s a bantam thing?
It sure helps you know it’s a boy without a doubt.

Hector used to crow a lot more when he lived here by himself.
He could hear the other roos in the neighborhood.
He does it way less now that he has girls.
I heard that if you have more than one roo in your flock, the dominant roo won’t let any others crow.
Hector is good with his girls because he was raised in a flock with older hens who taught him manners.
That’s the best rooster to get IMO.
Yes Frodo is a great name for a Cochin bantam!
I mean, Hobbits have big “furry” feet too!
Wally probably feels self conscious...like you’re judging his crow lol. He wants to perfect it before it goes on video.
