2018 Newbie Chat!

We were outbidded of the ebay coop so will be ordering a new one end of this month and it should be here within the first week of october - it is cheaper then other coops because it isn't weather proofed or painted but we have here all we need to do it ourselves, so that's not a problem but will need at least another week to air and be toxin free and safe for our girls to sleep in, so we are looking at second week of october before they move in. Do you think I should wait until we have the new coop before I sleep all the girls together as you so rightly pointed out the current hutch is too small and I'm thinking might be too stressful for Pedro and Jellybean because although Lilah is in no way a bully she does give the chase at least twice a day to remind them she's boss and although Roo and Lilah now nap under the trampoline with the others and earlier Roo was napping under there with Pedro and the ducks, Pedro and Jellybean still have their moments of trying to peck at her although they rarely succeed because she makes good use of all the hiding places she now has as I followed your advice? Would appreciate your thoughts and recommendation on this matter please :)
Pedro and JB (Jellybean) are trying to make sure Roo knows they are higher in the pecking order than her.
Just like Lilah does.
Yeah it would probably be a good idea to wait until the new coop is ready before putting them all together.
That way it’s new to ALL of them.

Be sure to only paint the parts of the new coop that are exposed to the weather.
The inside shouldn’t need it.
If you can find a paint low in VOCs that would be great.
If you don’t have that it’s okay because you still want to air it out anyway.
Birds are extremely chemical sensitive.

Could you post a photo of the new coop?

Also I’d love to see a current photo of Roo. I remember telling you I’d try to sex her/him when older.
How old is the little one now?

Hooray! Wally is back with the flock today. He’s thrilled, the poor girls not so much. He’s making advances on all of them. They really don’t want what he’s selling :lau

I've done a ton of research and I guess the problem is the Amber is the only Polish so she looks different and they peck at her. I found a university article that says a bird that feathers late (like Diamond) might get pecked too. Going to check out some anti pecking products and hope for the best. It's a 20 mile drive to the closest place that has any, but off I go.

These are the healthiest chicks I’ve ever raised. They are huge compared to the USPS shipped ones. The feather development is coming along a lot faster than previous times. Little Lazarus already has tail feathers! Keep in mind these babes hatched Thursday, so they just hit a week old. We haven’t had any pasty butt issues since they hatched. I thought for sure Lazarus would at least get some because she nearly froze to death. I’ve already had to raise my Brinsea twice. Hoping they are only big because they are very healthy.

I just saw this after I posted asking for a photo lol.
How cute!!
So far, Roo is looking like a she.
Ohhh I really hope so - I text my friend today in a panic because when holding Roo earlier I noticed bright red wattle development, he told me to send him pictures and I'm just waiting for him to reply but might be a while as he has to tend to all his chickens/ducks/pigs/goats/horses. I've noticed the wattles don't show up on this picture, might be because Roo is puffed up. Roo is just over 5wks old and will be 6wks next monday (24th)
