2018 Newbie Chat!

Someone laid this tiny egg in the yard today!
I can’t figure out who though.
It has to be one of the bantams because nobody else is old enough to lay and my current layers don’t lay eggs this dark.

I’m thinking either Mitzi or Minnie because I’m pretty sure my friend Kat told me the are part Cuckoo Marans.

Ohh wow, such a tiny little egg! Is that the normal size for a bantams egg?

Thanks so much for the link! I was seriously thinking of isolating her. Everything I read about isolating always takes place in the summer. How do I isolate, still maintain good winter feathers, and not have her get too cold without flockmates to keep her warm at night? I guess I could find a thread here that might answer that, lol. I thought of having her outside in a crate in the run during the day and then bring her into the basement where it's cool but not cold at night. Sort of semi isolation. That way she'd keep contact with everyone so if she did lose some winterization, she could always cuddle up at night with the others when she comes out of isolation.
It certainly is a hard one and winter makes it a whole lot more difficult. Personally I think your idea of keeping Diamond in a crate in the run is a very good idea, I am thinking though, wouldn't you still be able to sleep them together given that they barely move all night?

Can't get over how tiny this egg is - stupid question but how big would the chick/chicken be if you hatched that egg?

Am needing a great deal of reassurance about my Buff Orp being a pullet, so decided to create thread asking what gender, so far everyone's come back with pullet, which is great news for me - @ChooksNQuilts is adamant I have a pullet which is greatly reassuring for me but every now and then I get a little worried thinking what if.... thought I'd share the latest pics taken two days ago - this is Roo at exactly 8 weeks old

What you guys think?

At this time I would say girl.

I’m also questioning what I’ve hatched. I have one pullet for sure, one cockerel for sure. The third one is stumping me, it fights with the cockerel a lot. It’s stance seems a bit more upright, and it’s extremely social with me. The last couple days it’s comb has gotten a bit more pink and my gut is telling me little cockerel. I so desperately want it to be a pullet. What do you all think I’ve got? It’s only 3.5 weeks old.

And here is Diamond today at 7 weeks. Contrast the color of his comb and presence of baby waddles with Roo's. Roo is a pullet. I think Diamond tried to crow today too. It was squeeky and just one long sound without any breaks, but I haven't heard anyone else make that sound.View attachment 1555051 View attachment 1555052
Thank you for this, I see what you mean, there is a remarkable difference between Roo's and Diamond's comb & wattle development and colour.
I would have loved to have heard Diamond trying to crow, bet he sounds so cute - any chance of you capturing on video him trying to crow and posting it?

I think cockerel, by what you've said and also the way its standing on this picture makes me think cockerel but if its not then I'd say you have yourself a very confident and self assured hen
