2018 Newbie Chat!

Here in the Great PNW winter has finally arrived. I live in a valley surrounded by large mountains and the Columbia River. The wind chills have been frigid. Tomorrow the rain starts (it likely won’t end until May). So for the last few days I’ve been free ranging all day. I moved my Littles in their A frame coop next to the big one to start introductions. I’m going to take introductions really slow this time around. Here’s some pictures from yesterday. View attachment 1610269View attachment 1610270 View attachment 1610271
Once feathered out I keep my juveniles in the prefab with run for about two to three weeks.
The big ones get used to seeing them but when I let the juveniles out to mingle they’re still small enough that the bigger ones aren’t threatened by them.

Well I jinxed us. I was all, "we are in the 70s and 80s la Dee da." Well a cold front came in last weekend dropping us into the 40-50s until yesterday that is. Now we are in the 30s and we woke up to this.

No one dares come out to try it. Lol!

Edited to add: I always post thumbnails of my photos because I use the BYC app and they pop up in a little box that doesnt swallow up my screen. So sorry if they appear small!

Mine did the same thing! :lau
They seemed to think the snow was like water and they might drown in it lol.
If you shovel a trail for them they might come out.
Our temps are supposed to go up a little.
I’ll take the 30s over the teens any day!

No worries about your photos.
I use my phone on BYC most of the time and if I tap on the photo in your post it gets bigger.

Hiiii everyone. I'm so sorry I have disappeared. My mom mentioned you were asking about me haha! She keeps me updated on what's going on. Sorry to hear about your ducks, @Anna Ranieri :((
And about the destroyed run @llombardo

I have had a hectic year, but in a good way. I got married, adopted a puppy, and now my brother is getting married in December and I am standing in the wedding.

The chickens have been good though. Right now I only have two laying, Elsa and Belle. Kida, Nala, Moana and Lilo are all molting, though Kida and Nala I think are pretty much done but haven't started up laying again.
I decided not to supplement light over winter because I am not depending on high egg production or anything and laziness won out.
Here's a picture of Lilo looking like a hot mess

It's been cold but they have been handling it well. When it snows they don't get a lot of it in their run since it's covered but they spend more time in their coop anyway just because of the cold.
I've been giving them some boredom busters like a pumpkin to pick at (free from the garden center after Halloween!) And some mealworm blocks in a suet feeder. I'm also sprouting some wheatgrass fodder for them in my living room hehe

In non chicken news, the puppy graduated manners training today!
