2018 Newbie Chat!

Another coyote attack on 3 dogs this time. 2-50 pound dogs and one 20 pound. Seems the bigger two were protecting the small one. 1 pit bull mauled, second pit bull with very very bad injuries and small dogs with some scrapes on the ears. May the one RIP..she gave her life for the other one.

Another reminder to watch all small pets and this includes chickens--this hapoened at 3 in the afternoon.
Oh my gosh that's awful! Poor dogs!
And how gallant of that precious to give her life for another, may she RIP :(
I know nothing about coyote but I know a little about Pit Bulls and they are amongst the hardest dogs to beat, so either coyote are unbeatable or they are working together in pack's. I really hope someone somewhere can get control over these predators soon, it is shocking to think of the devastation they are causing and could cause if they are not stopped.
Do you guys have any animal control organisation who could get a handle on this situation? I hope so.

They are ptlretty protected here. All the surrounding cities issue something on their websites. The General wsy it is, supervise pets and kids, if you see one--make lots of noise to scare them away and don't feed them.

Years ago certain suburbs brought the coyotes in to control deer population. Most are tracked in the city. Of course they didn't think about them multiplying and here we are.

OMG! That's horrible! Bless those dogs for protecting the little one. Did anyone see how many coyotes?

I think it was 2-3, the way it read. It said multiple. It's also mating season, so that plays a part. I used to think my GSDs would be ok and they may one on one, but not multiples.

Here is the surviving pit bull, it looks like they focus on the head and neck. The other pit bull was mauled. They left after they killed it, so I'm sure this was not about food with the bigger dogs. The bigger dogs got in the way of dinner, which was the smaller dog.

Poor babies! I’ve been on the lookout here. Free ranging has ceased here for many reasons. One being predators.
Lock down on my two eggs is tomorrow. I’m setting up my brooder tonight in a XL dog kennel. Fingers crossed, positive vibes, and prayers my way. I need both eggs to hatch! If one doesn’t hatch I do have a back up to prevent it from being alone for too long!

Keep us informed of the progress of your eggs!

I will! I’m so eggcited! I candled them this evening and everything is looking great. Babies are very dark, I think they’ll pip sooner rather than later! DH is on graves and the incubator is in the bedroom, poor thing won’t be sleeping well this week!

My black sex links are getting very big, red wattles and combs. I am hoping for some new eggs soon! My EEs are getting a little redder in their combs also. Cricket tried to go broody again. That's three times for her in the last couple of months. Then Cat tried to go broody as well a couple of weeks ago. I'm definitely not doing a large flock of SS again. If I had unlimited space a broody hen raising clutches every couple of months would be nice but this isn't the case. I don't think the girls have let Bear mate either. I see them chase him off still. He still makes sure to stay out of my space and if I'm in the coop I make him leave while I'm working so he knows it's not his business. He can tend to the girls while I clean and collect eggs. I make sure we all alternate going out every couple of days so he recognizes us and our chores.

Still waiting for eggs here. 3 out of 4 seem to have red combs but evidently not red enough, lol. Pearl, my top of the pecking order pullet only has a mildly pink comb. Her rank may be in danger if someone starts laying.
Looks like about 8 inches of snow here. I have no idea what the official amount is. There's snow in the run, I don't know if the chickens have gone out of the coop yet. I don't see any footprints in the snow but they can get to the water and feed without hitting the snow. Only half of the run has snow and the feed and water are under the coop. It's still snowing although it has slowed considerably.
