2018 Newbie Chat!

My baby chicks are growing up fast. They turned two weeks old yesterday. I named them both, I’m almost certain the black baby is a cockerel. The blue is a pullet. I named the black Hawthorne and the Blue Wysteria. View attachment 1665492

So cute! I like their names.
So excited I got 2 green eggs today and my BSL are squatting!

Beautiful eggs! I can't wait to get some. My pullets were 24 weeks old on Monday, no eggs yet.

Thanks for the egg love yall! I absolutely adore the color:love I'm already trying to convince DH we need a dark brown layer in our flock now because we NEED the contrasting colors. Lol. We are selling our eggs now. A friend of DH has a couple of chickens but can't keep up with his demand so we are filling in. We got a request for 3 dz today and just in time to plop in our new green eggs. They're fart eggs but oh so pretty fart eggs.:lau I haven't bought my Dutch oven yet so I haven't tried a traditional sourdough loaf. Today I used my starter along with active yeast and made these two loaves! I can't wait to cut in to them. It is midnight here in Texas so I'll refrain til morning!

Lovely loaves!!

I've got a problem. For the past week or so, my sweet cochin Diamond has started biting me. Not pecking, but biting my hand, chomping and holding on. Today she bit me and i pulled my hand away and she was hanging from it! She's also been pecking hard at my jeans and shoes. I've been trying to walk towards her and push her back when I'm in the run. Today I picked her up after she bit me and carried her around in a football hold. But only for a couple minutes of a trip away from the coop. I didn't have gloves on and my hands were getting pretty cold by then.
Any ideas? Do they ever get ornery right before they start laying? Hoping for that reason, haha.

Keep holding her like a football, try to hold her about twenty min a day. After a few weeks at max she’ll settle down. Some get over it once they start laying, some keep being brats. My ash girl was so aggressive before she started laying that I thought she may have been a cockerel. After a couple weeks of the football hold she settled down. she’s now my favorite bird. We bonded from it. She’ll still bite me if I take an egg from her. But aside from that she’s not aggressive at all anymore.

I had to laugher the chicken biting, who would think they would? Prince got me one time when he was younger. He thought I had food and the girls were pecking around, so he joined in. Dorothy will peck at me if I put t hand in front of her. We are just waiting for the weather to break here. Meanwhile they are all still in the house and they seem pretty happy. Mornings are pretty funny here. As soon as my alarm goes off the dogs start moving around, a couple bark, the roosters start crowing, ducks are quacking and cats meowing. It is literally like feeding time at the zoo....

Here they are roosting for the night
