2018 Newbie Chat!

Enjoy the squeaky crow while it lasts. Manchineel (my young cockerel) crows at everything... he’s right next to my house, driving me and the neighbors nuts. Wally my Rooster is wonderful with his crowing, he only crows in the morning.. I hope your cockerel isn’t as bad as mine!
ha see I am on 35 acres and the coop is at least 2 from the house. if the windows are open in summer i can hear them otherwise, nothing. I would definitely be worried if I was in your setup!

so I have 5 5 1/2 month old Cochins- 3 girls 2 boys. last night one of my boys started finding his voice- not sure if its Big Blue or Buster, but is there anything more amusing than a cockerel learning to crow?
I think it’s funny and adorable too.
I had a black bantam Cochin cockerel, named Frodo, who crowed at 5 weeks!
I got it on video too.

I'm not sure how my two boys do it, but they crow together. Not sure how they time it just right. They both crow in the morning and when they hear I'm home. If I'm with thrm and leave them and they are not accepting of that they crow and it sounds like they are screaming for me.

I had more branches come down. I have so much clean up to do in spring, not looking forward to it at all.

I've been working with a couple dogs that we're having issues. My golden had 3 lumps, we are down to one that seems to be shrinking. So the stuff I went with is working. My oldest pyo came up with a growth in her the top of her paw. This pup is 14.5 and still giving me a run for my money. She keeps getting the bandage off. We went through three different size inflatable cones and now we are on the reg cone. She has still got the darn bandage off. She stands with the cone against the vot which moves it enough for her to tear off bandage. I just put one on, by the time I walked back from the kitchen it was off. It's aggravating, but I'm happy she still has that fight in her at her age. The growth is going away, but sliwly because she keeps getting to it. I have spent the last 14 years trying to stay a step ahead of her, she has always been impossible to beat--super smart and I love her for it.

He has progressed to the gargling stage. His brother isn't making any noise yet, and I have an almost 8 month old cockerel- he of the hawk attack and funny feathers, who still isn't making noise either. Of course, that one is in with the mature Orpington boy which may be inhibiting him some.

My Jersey Giant babies turned three weeks old yesterday. They are the most curious bunch of chicks I’ve ever had. My persistence with egg yolks as treats has won over their little hearts.

In a week my three Ameraucana eggs go on lockdown. I’ve candled them a few times, their egg shells are so thick it’s making it hard to see anything. Luckily my eye sight is 20/20 so I was able to make out very thick veining near the air sack on all three. Once you know what to look for candling is a breeze. Ive run out of brooders to put the new babies in so I’m going to convert a guinea pig cage into a brooder in a weeks time. I’ll share pictures.

The two eggs Bootsie and Minnie are setting should hatch sometime this weekend.
I haven’t been able to candle since 10 days incubation so I don’t know how things are going.
DH isn’t sure they’ll hatch because they get off the eggs to eat and drink and they cool off a bit.
I think they’re probably fine.
We’ll find out soon enough.
Fingers crossed! :fl

So exciting! Do you have a hatching thread?

Edited to add:
I have a bad cold, just what I needed with this long cold spell. Still no eggs!

They are beautiful, will they stay black or dark coloured?
