2018 Newbie Chat!

Tip of the day:

When applying Blu Kote wear gloves!
Do not get it on your skin.
If you do, you have 10 minutes to get it off.
Rubbing alcohol works best.
Unfortunately for me I learned these things after spilling it and trying everything to get it off.

I really wish they had a warning on the bottle about how it stains your skin.

Oh my that looks like its there to stay for a while! It is so bad of the manufacturers not to print a warning, maybe might be worth lodging a complaint?
Don't know if this will help but over the years I've found soaking in a good brand dish washing water works, I find fairy liquid which I believe is named dawn in your country, is the best.

Ugh I'm having a hard time coming up with names for the new ones. I'm watching their personalities and coming up with nada zilch. Can not even think of a theme..lol

So far
The cinnamon Queen I named Cinnamon--real original(sarcasm)but fitting

The silver polish with beak issues-I have been calling her little one

The sapphire gem which has become the friendliest out of all(older and younger)--I have been calling her sweet pea

One of them reminds me of a chipmunk, the crested polish(can't think of something fitting) and the other 3 I have no clue.
My newest 5 pullets didn't have names for the longest. Two of my black sex links shine so pretty in the sunlight I decided glimmer and shimmer were fitting. And my last nameless EE got stuck with Frida because it popped in my head and stuck. Lol. I named one Rosy bc she was always so nosey. And my son named one EE Dwight Jr. I'm the only one who knows their names and can tell them all apart.

How do you like the wood pellets?
Do they try to eat them?
The D&B Supply I got my EE and BR from uses them.
I hate pine shavings too!
Mostly because they really don’t decompose and end up all over my yard. :he
We've been throwing our pine shavings into the run when we clean out their coop. They all get turned into the ground when we are covering the ten thousand gigantic holes they dig lol. I agree they don't break down very well at all. If we weren't constantly turning over the dirt in the run I'm sure they would be piled high by now.

How are your fluffs doing? We haven't seen updated pics in a while.

Big changes going on here! I let my broody Australorp Olive sit finally. She’s been sitting 7 days straight now. Another 2 weeks and we should have more chicks. I’ve broken all other broody hens (what a feat that was). My two Ameraucana that we hatched almost three months ago are going out to be with Lazarus in 2-3 weeks. My Jersey giants just turned 7 weeks and they are starting to get larger than the average pullets. So if you’re counting that’s four brooders going at once. What the hell was I thinking? I’m still considering getting a couple brahmas next week on top of that. Which would bring my brooder count to 5! In other news I’m pregnant, so I’m hoping to get all chicks out of the house ASAP.
Here’s some pictures to help you guys see who’s who.

Black Jersey Giants: 7 weeks (fun fact, they’re such a heavy breed that this brooder doesn’t need a top) unnamed.

Ameraucana: 9 weeks. Black is cockerel named Hawthorne to replace Manchineel (who we are culling tonight). Blue is pullet named Wisteria. (Her coloration is beautiful it has no black leakage)

Wonderful pics and congratulations on your great news? When are you due?
You seem to have chickens " coming out of you're ears" lol. How many do you have in total?

Thank you! I’m due October 23rd. I have 18 adult birds. & 10 chicks right now. Whilst outside today my neighbors (not my bad chicken abusing neighbors) asked if I’d be willing to sell them five laying hens. Which will put me back to a reasonable number. At least three of my chicks are cockerels, so at least two of them will be culled or rehomed. In total I can easily House 30 chickens. I wouldn’t feel comfortable going over that.

Congrats on your wonderful news!!
Wisteria is beautiful, and with a beautiful name.
So nice to see Lazarus looking so good and laying her first egg. To think you almost lost her and look at her now. :love
