2018 Newbie Chat!

I told you guys how the people across the road lost their last hen to am oppossum and they have killed two oppossum and a raccoon. Well after the hen was killed Willie(the stray rooster that made me decide to get chickens) was very hard to get in the coop and he went missing last week. No signs of him anywhere. He did this to me, disappeared and ended up with them. So I'm hoping he went down the road where they have some girls. I hope he is safe but that is probably not the reality of it. No trace, not even a feather would be a coyote or fox I would think. We also have a huge hawk that has been circling for a couple weeks now. I know he is around because the crows get loud. I really liked that rooster a lot.

So now the threat of predators has grown and I'm really scared and anxious.i can't think of anything else to do to predator proof this area, unless I go concrete all the way around. I can't add anymore electric fencing, there is already like 7 strands all the way around.
Oh my, that s awful, I too hope that Willie is safe - sounds like he has good survival skills so hopefully he is. So sorry for you to have such worries of predators, can imagine how awful it must be :(

I've just read an announcement on the facebook of The Chuckery, where I took my ducks, the owners woke this morning to finding someone had been on their property (they think possibly to steal birds) and whoever it was left the shed door open which gave access to a fox or foxes. The owners are in the process of searching for any survivors if there are any, so I don't know yet if it is the shed my ducks were kept in, nor know how many doors were left open or how many birds have been killed. I've messaged them asking them to let me know asap if my ducks are ok - its almost 2 AM here so they won't read the message until the morning. I am so worried for my ducks and have an awful feeling they are dead. I hate this world and the nasty people who live in it - we got our ducks with the want and intention to keep them - we took them to The Chuckery because it is one of the best bird rescue sanctuaries we have in our country and hoped my ducks would live a long and happy life there and we have planned to go visit them once a year (as they are so far away from where we live) now there is a strong chance they have been killed, my drakes are only just a year old and my girls only 10 and 11 months old, it will break my heart if they are gone.

Sending positive thoughts. I truly hope everything is ok.

I've just been informed that they no longer think its a fox attack but that someone stealing the birds. Jughead has gone, he has been stolen along with other birds by someone. Napoleon, Aurora and Midnight are fine - this is a bittersweet situation, I am fearing for Jughead while at the same time relieved the others are ok. I am so angry and upset, poor Jughead.

I've been observing Duke the last few days. I'm on guard with this one. That may have something to do with everything I have read about Leghorns points to aggression. I can tell you that he doesn't like the stick I carry, he did Attack it, but backed off pretty quick. He wasn't trying to attack me, it was defintely the stick. He takes his job slightly more seriously then Prince. Duke gathers them and gets any that are procrastinating into the coop, he is gentle when mating, he dances a lot, he crows a lot. He does crow when he hears me. He doesn't wait for me at te gate like Prince. He actually doesn't like the girls to be by the gate. Prince has more trust in the fact the dogs are not getting in and he would just watch them--Duke would probably Attack if he could. I can read Prince pretty well--not there with Duke yet. I haven't spent any one on one time with the girls since he has been in there and I miss that. I will start putting him up in the coop so I can. He watches them way to close and I don't trust him--even if those evil Spurs are capped. A work in progress.

Poor Jughead! I'm so sorry. But glad the others are ok. Maybe he ran off and will yet show up.

Thank you for your kindness :) I keep hoping he will be found but the owners of the Chuckery are certain he has been stolen along with 25 chickens 3 other ducks and 1 goose. It is so sad and I am so scared for him and my only hope is that they are sure as they can be that the birds were stolen to be sold and I hope with all my heart that he will end up in a good caring and loving home. I feel for the owners of the Chuckery as they lost their chickens etc and their precious goose which they have had for years, she is very special to them.
Jughead and Napoleon have always Bern together since they were one week old and they had a very close, strong and special bond so I can only imagine it is very hard on both to be separated. I keep hoping he will be found but it is very unlikely he will be :(

This is all so very sad.

Yes so very sad. I can't help being angry and bitter at the fact that if they were still with me they would be safe and he would have never been stolen but as you know it was taken out of my hands and I had no choice but to let them go. It's all so terribly sad and awful.

I would watch listings for ducks for sale in the paper or any other form of classified ads within a 60 mile radius.

How does one steal 25 chickens? I mean they had to plan it, they had to have a vehicle and flashlights. I just can't picture it. There had to be some kind of noise.

Very rotten people.
