2019 Peafowl

Pics
I understand. Craig is a good guy and has done much for the peafowl community, and is very knowledgeable. Still, if I were going to use Tylan I would dose according to what all of my vet books, vets, and the makers of Tylan suggest. :idunno

Common practice between large breeders is 1.0 to 1.5 ml per day for three to five days in most cases. We never inject into the muscle as it will bruise, you can see what it does upon necropsy. I am still waiting for pics of the inside of the mouth. How long has she bee raspy? If she has no other symptoms just raspiness with lesions in the mouth and is eating well I have concerns.

I understand it's common practice, but I would like to see something from a veterinarian saying that is how it should be done. You know me, lol, I am just funny that way.

She started with a mucusy cough Tuesday morning then I saw head shakes and gaping on Wednesday. I wasn’t home Thursday so yesterday I swabbed her throat and found no worms. She has been a little sluggish. I gave her safeguard 10% and tylan 200 last night. She sounds much better today not nearly as raspy. Here’s pics of her mouth, I didn’t see any lesions.

My hen seems to be responding well to the tylan. She’s not sluggish at all and her raspyness is almost completely gone. On another positive note the 5 eggs I have in my incubator were just candled and all 5 have a visible embryo and veins. Fingers crossed.

I know I'm late to the party (was out on vacation), but I remember asking my vet about a few of the common meds available to fowl keepers and telling her the "commonly recommended" dosages... I also remember her being appalled at both how high some of them were and the intervals at which they were recommended to be given. At least according to my vet, @casportpony is right that Tylan is meant to be administered in smaller doses several times, and over a longer duration than I've seen recommended anywhere.

But honestly, how many vets actually specialize in avians specifically (mine does but while many vets will see birds it's not like it's usually their main thing) and even the ones that DO specialize in avians... Many are geared towards treating parrots or other cage birds like pigeons, which can be wildly different in terms of physiology and medication needs (just to name one off the top of my head, fenbendazole is deadly toxic to pigeons but fine for peas) so even someone with avian knowledge may not be well versed in OUR avians.

I think a lot of the "common use" medications have, understandably and out of necessity, been figured out by us keepers as "what works without killing the birds" rather than "what has been actually studied to be good and safe without unknown side effects" since... well, we had no choice. We've kind of been on our own here, and we've done our best to collectively settle on what works and it seems like there's a few answers to every question because everyone's had different experiences or been told different things by vets struggling to give us answers they don't really have either, since there's not many folks busting down doors to dump tons of money into researching medication for peafowl specifically. It sure would be nice if they could get on that research so we could point at it... Anyone feel like buying a lotto ticket??

We are excited. Twenty-five eggs and counting. We have 10 under a barred rock hen and 15 in an incubator. We´re getting another incubator today.

The babies here are doing great! This weekend I moved them out to the barn with heat lamps in the new small baby pen we built for them, and they are so funny!! When I open the door they're always right there milling around my feet begging for treats

When I sit down, my favorite little bug jumps up and cuddles down on my lap.

I am forbidden from doing anything in the adjacent big pen with Stan and Artemis or else I get 9 little puppy dog faces and a bunch of sad noises:
