So, I have had chickens less than a year and already have dealt with losing 2 to predation, roundworm, frostbite, wry neck and a possible bumblefoot case, the last two are current and obviously at the same time. I love my birds, but sometimes when a new medical case pops up it can be a bit discouraging. Does everyone have such an "introduction" into the world of poultry? I want to expand and breed, but working full time means playing doctor must happen very early and very late in the day. Does everyone have such a start, or do some folks have an easier go than others??
I'll say that... I'm home all day, I've lost 6 babies in two weeks to stress, failure to thrive, or pasty butt. This last year I lost 5 pullets to predator. With chickens, animals in general really, loss is to be expected unfortunately. I was so glad I had a friend that told me that when I started or I wouldn't have been able to handle it.
We've only been doing chickens for a year .. we do doctoring when we can and then it's up to the chick or chicken if it'll make it. Loss is hard... I cry when I loose them but they are just so fun,so I just keep getting the little fluffy ones!
Don't know if that helps you.. but just know you're amongst people that understand!

I've been pretty stressed out lately, with all the food stuff, chicken stuff... Life. Went out to see chicks and end up chasing some that escaped the barn brooder.
I might need to put some wire mesh there to keep them from escaping every time I open the door.
