2021 Chick Order

With barreds, do the males or the females have a large head spot? I have 2 of one and 1 of the other and am hoping that I have 2 girls. I guess I'll know in a few weeks when they feather out, but I'm not the most patient 😅

Barred males typically have the bigger head spot, and more white in the feathers.
They've got ZZ chromosomes, so they can have two copies of the barring gene.
Females with ZW can only have one copy of the barring gene, so less white.

Rats, two have giant splotches. Oh well. I have more coming in another order, so I still have a chance. Would like at least 2 to make a sexlinked trio (using one of my frizzle bbs males with them to make sexlinks), but the more girls the more picky I can be

Whoo hoo, IDEAL shipped last night. The tiny bit of tracking I have says they should be here by Friday night, hoping by tomorrow. I think ours came in a Thursday last year, but can't really remember.

Dunlap didn't call last night and they ship today, so hoping that means that they hatched out what I needed and ate sending it. That I know will be here tomorrow since they're the state below us

What a whirlwind of a time! So sorry for all your losses & delays.
Do you keep each hatchery order separate for six weeks? Or treat them with all Corid right away?
I mixed a hatchery order (@5 days old) and some 3-6 day olds from a local breeder and before they were 2 weeks old, I had some dying and a case of cocci identified in a stool sample. None of the chicks had touched ground before, and I thought it took longer to get/die from cocci, but I learned otherwise.
My future plan is to only get chicks from one source once a year, but I do have trouble with chicken math!
I am interested to hear how you manage biosecurity with so many chick sources.
🤞🏼for the next shipments!

I've never seperated clutches from multiple commercial hatcheries. From private sources, yes they are quarantined for the 2 months recommended, but these are all from places that are for the most part not at risk if bringing in anything besides a failure to thrive.

I know other people do it differently and I don't blame them, I just don't.

For the most part though they're also around the same age if mixed with another group, and fed with medicated feed to try and cut down on getting sick from coccidiosis.

Even if I kept them in seperate boxes, they're still all in the same room, so even then they're really not being seperate.

They do however stay away from older birds for at least 4 (usually at least 8) weeks since they're in the house and the adults are not

Alrighty, got a message from IDEAL (From a few days ago but my phone is for some reason not registering that I'm getting call half the time) saying they they didn't hatch enough if the red shouldered Yokohama and that they'll put me on a waitlist. I'm going to call them after class to see if I can tentatively get them put on my later order with replacement golden necks but if I cant, I'll probably just pass on that breed.
