2022 Chicks - Cackle Experience

BBS Ameraucana, Favaucana, and FBCM...I'm so excited I'm downright neurotic :lau So I can relate to you
Neurotic is a pretty accurate descriptor for it. Not sure how many times I've told the dogs, the chickens, the people in the house "Where are my chicks? why aren't they here yet? Can't you make them come faster?!" Logically I know nothing can be done but hrnggggggg. It's worse than I remember Christmas being as a kid.

Dear USPS,

This is an entirely unsatisfactory update.

In my experience, the tracking info when you have eggs coming is pretty much useless! I would make sure you have speed dial to your local post office phone number. Arrange to pick them up in person at the post office so they’re not sitting on the post truck another half a day bouncing around getting over to you.😊
Our local post office is unfortunately notorious for never answering the phone. It's actually ridiculous and had me really worried so I went in a couple weeks ago to discuss what the process was. Being decently rural and in the middle of ag country they seem to have to process down at least! I was reassured they would call me the morning of arrival for pickup at the will call window that opens in the lobby before the post office actually opens. They won't deliver to houses at all, a good thing as we don't get our mail typically until 3pm or so.

I was hoping I'd be able to follow tracking and see it getting close to judge if I should just show up before they even call me. I'll have to keep it in mind when I order eggs this fall though to have them hold the package and call. Since eggs aren't necessarily "live animals" I'm not sure they get held automatically.

Gah, I wish ours had a separate area! No one would answer and I spent 45 minutes waiting for someone to come to the counter early just in case. Because I could HEAR my babies!!! We still had a while til opening, so we picked up the brooder really fast and got back right at opening. Such a dumb process

Ahhh I would definitely have embarrassed my hubby if I could hear my babies but couldn't get to them! I'd be calling out for help and talking to the chickies, "Don't worry, I hear you, as soon as someone comes out here I'll take you home!" :lau

I had my 3 year old, how could they not hear her??? Lots of singing about chicks and letting me know loudly that she could hear her babies lol

IT'S TIME!:celebrate:celebrateStarting a thread to track the experience and post follow ups as the chicks grow.

First order of the season:

At 11:50AM the last leg of the countdown began with an email from Cackle saying the order has shipped. :wee

Wait... not exactly. A shipping label has been created but don't get excited and don't get worried. It should be scanned when received at the post office (though sometimes it isn't).

So of course I've signed up for text shipping updates and still find myself checking the tracking number hourly. Sigh. Waiting is so hard!

In the meantime, got the brooder setup and figured out the correct heat lamp height for when the chicks get here. We should be able to turn on the light as soon as we get the call from the post office. I'm really really hoping for Wednesday arrival so I can get the chicks myself, kiddo has wisdom teeth getting removed Thursday morning meaning hubby would have to do the honors and he's not that great with pictures.

Two days... Maybe three... I can do this...
