2022 Chicks - Cackle Experience

Pics
Hey Cackle friends. I have a chick that I am having trouble identifying. At first I thought it was an Americauna from my blue egg layer surplus package but....it has feathered legs. So then I thought it must be a french maran from my dark egg layer surplus, but didn't match those pics to me. So I posted it on the what breed thread and someone thinks cochin. It does sort of resemble the barred cochin,(https://www.cacklehatchery.com/product/barred-cochin-standard-chicken/) but does Cackle just send random bonus chicks to people who didn't order them ? I did get extras..but was wondering if anyone else. has gotten a breed they did not order? Here's her pic. Or is this a maran? Thanks for helping🐣View attachment 3030441
Looks like either a black maran or cochin to me. I'm leaning towards cochin.

Chicks made it to the local post office and were scanned in at 1am. They aren't in "held for customer" status though, they are in "expected delivery by 9pm" status.

I'm concerned that my mail lady may have gone rogue. We spoke last week and I mentioned we'd be expecting chicks Friday for pickup at the office. She seemed confused that they made me pick them up last time as she delivered 8 boxes of chicks to one of the local feed stores that same week. I voiced confusion why they were and to be delivered and ours had to be picked up but that I was happy to do it so we'd get them right at 7am and into the brooder. She said if she had live animals she'd bring them right out to us first thing.

I thought nothing of it until the package not being scanned as holding for customer. I can't imagine she was there at 1am scanning when we typically get our mail around 2pm. So did someone mis-scan and I should get them at the post office? Or is this intentional and if I go in they will be crossing paths on the way? Thankfully hubby is home so I can go in to the post office and if we cross paths he will be here to intercept.
Sorry. Stopped getting notifications on this thread or I would have explained this earlier.
The 1am scan is from a drop ship, meaning the truck from the hub/plant off loaded the mail at that time and some poor schmoe had to be in the office to accept and secure it. The packages/mail are typically NOT sorted or scanned until official start time when other employees arrive. Normally between 4 and 7am depending on the office.

As for having chicks delivered to your house this is against policy. Businesses are different as someone is almost always present during business hours and an employee can not normally be spared to pick them up from the office.
The Post Offices stance is that the chicks will survive better held at the office rather then bouncing around with the mail all day being exposed to all manor of temp swings, drafts, and fumes.
If this is a hardship you can sometimes make arrangements with the post master for an exception though this is rare.

Some offices like to wait to deal with chick orders till everything else is sorted and on route. Some like to have noisy chicks out of the office ASAP and will call the minute they come in.
People are people regardless of what job they hold.
If you have a chick order expected, Please always let your local office know ahead of time with your phone number.
And DO use the lovely txt msg tracking feature from usps.com. It can be a lifesaver.

Ditto this. 👆👆👆
I see a black chick there. And cackle only carries a few feather footed breeds.
I'll love it no matter breed, just curious if they'd send me a breed, like a cochin, that is not at all like the breeds I ordered as an extra. The marans would make more sense, since I ordered the dark egg layer surplus. Its leg feathering is also heavier than the other marans chicks I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait a few weeks🙂

Or is this a maran?

Looks a lot like a French Cuckoo Maran to me.

I also ordered the dark brown egg layer surplus.

ETA: attached a photo from Cackle of the Cuckoo Maran.

Right!? Also maybe a little intimidating since you don’t know if you’re getting waterfowl or turkeys or just chicks or what! LOL but I like the surprise 🤣🤣🤣 I think I even saw a guinea in one of the things!!!

I also just saw this one which would be nice as well because at least you know what you’re getting :lau

https://www.cacklehatchery.com/product/happy-cackle/

Then again, I feel like the surprise is half the fun :lau 🙈

They have soooooo many assortments/specials hahah I was just looking through them all 🤣🤣🤣
The potential for waterfowl and turkeys are why I couldn't pull the trigger on a surprise. We are arid desert and have no setup for a pond or a separate brooding/living area.

So glad to hear that you got them so quickly. We're NE WA and mine are shipping next week from Cackle!
Congrats on the new brood shipping soon! I hope your chicks arrive as healthy and happy as ours did. No losses in our orders though one that had pretty splayed legs is yet to grow in feathers like the rest of her group.

We got three extras that are of the same breeds we ordered. I'm hoping that the extra buff Orpington is a pullet like the other three at least. I don't have room for a non-breeding project roo and Helios is too adorable to not get attached to.

Mine are shipping on Wednesday. However, I have all of the different breeds open in tabs on my laptop to help identify them when they come. So I looked through all the options and yours looked closest to the cuckoo.
Good luck with your shipment!
