2026 Chick Thread!

Pics
I've just hatched my first clutch of eggs here. I was going to wait till next spring (I'm in Australia) before I hatched any eggs from my pullets but I had older hens go broody so I thought I'd give some a go. First clutch was 5 eggs in total. 3 Old English game and 2 OEG/Malay cross. We candled the eggs around 10 days and thought 3 definite but 2 maybes. 3 chicks have hatched. 2 Malay cross and one pure OEG. I don't have a pic of the OEG but here's the Malay cross. The broody is an Australian Pit game hen.

I going to replace my rooster come spring but will keep a closed flock then. If I need different genetics I'll buy fertile eggs from breeders and let my girls hatch them, mainly for bio-security reasons.

I’m already ahead of you. My silly Seramas thought the snow and cold of December was the perfect time to go broody. I had two unauthorized hatches so now I have chickens in the house. (Normally they winter in my garage with a panel heater) this week it’s predicted to have -26°F wind chills so my Serama mamas are inside. Each mama has 3 chicks. They are about 2 weeks apart. 1. What breeds are you getting? I don't know, but I am looking forward to getting some more Orpingtons, Speckled Sussexes, Brahmas, Wyandottes, Barred rocks, standard size Silkies, Black copper marans, and more breeds.

2. How many? I don't know. I currently have 40 hens, 5 roosters, 4 drakes, and 2 ducks. I might have some room for 4-10 chicks.

3. Are you hatching, getting day olds or started pullets? I am getting day olds from TSC and Fleet farm.

4. Are you going to raise them yourself or let a broody do it for you? I will raise them myself.

A bit early? Sure, but I can't be the only one thinking about getting chicks next year. Post about your plans here!

Go wild and when the time comes, post pictures!
Maybe finishing my collection but i have 18 chickens. I would one ea. like a blue laced red wyandotte, a golden polish, and maybe an ayam cemani hybrid of some sort.
I have a broody, so planning on using her and maybe letting her hatch a few of our eggs.
