23 New Chicks......14 Dead Chicks!

Masonic Chicken I'm so sorry this happened to you. I do thank you for telling everyone about it. I'm pretty close to you in Mossy Head and now I know to stay away from him. I hope your other babies will be O.K. You sound like a great momma

Are they getting chilled?? In the pic of your brooder set up, looks like the lamp is way too high. My lamps are usually about 12" over their heads. Just curious..

I am so sorry this happened to you.

And we all need to take this as a warning to always consider where we purchase from. There is a gentleman near me who purchases 250 chicks at Auction for 15 cents a piece, brings them home and sells the for $2.00 a piece and leads people to believe he hatched them himself. Yet if anyone looked around, often times he does not have the breeding stock of that breed of chick he is selling.

Again, very sorry. You grow attached to them and then they die. It hurts. They are NOT just chickens.

Finding out about auction chicks the hard way sucks. I'm very sorry. Auctions, multiple transports and all that handling can be very very hard on chicks.

It's a tough way to find out that some people pretend to hatch what they're selling.

Bargains often aren't.

I recommend Ideal. I've had no trouble from them, ever. Great customer service, healthy chicks, my partridge rocks from them even went broody. That's good for hatchery birds.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. I'm sorry for the wee ones too. Hope some make it.

Hey there...I'm wondering about your bedding. It appears to be hay? If so, they could be eating seed heads, which would bind them up & could be a possible issue for you. They really shouldn't be on bedding until at least 3-4 days old because they do tend to eat pretty much anything in sight. I use puppy training pads, and then move them to pine shavings; I never use hay, for the above-mentioned reason. I'm very sorry for you losses, and I HOPE you can find out for sure what is happening.

Thanks for all the kind words. I will admit sometimes I just kinda jump in and do things without thinking to clearly. I should have assumed that there was a catch as to why he was selling them so cheap...

As for the hay....I didn't think it would be an issue. I am not sure if it was...all the birds from what I can tell, just lay over and die. They look fine and then I look again and they are dead. Some of the others seem to have a shallow breathing pattern from what I can tell. I had a few pasty butts, but we quickly spotted them out.

I was just not aware of the AUCTION EGGS before I bought them, from everything I read, eggs carry disease and other possible issues. He did say he has just built some MASSIVE new incubator. He was talking about hatching 4000 at a time. I assumed they were all from his own birds. He said they run his 10 acres etc...I am so angry with myself, cause if I had known I would have for sure not dealt with him..I just assumed he was on the level.

Live and Learn.....like my signatures says..........

Is your light too far from the chicks? I am a noob but I have 25 ISA Browns in my basement that stays a constant 65'F and I have 2 175W heat bulbs that are about 2ft from the bottom of my kiddy pool brooder. This keeps them at a nice 95'F but gives them half the kiddy pool to get away from the heat if they get too hot. Seems to be working as they are feathering out really quickly. It is blowing my mind how fast they are growing up.

I also added elecrolytes to my water and fed medicated chick feed.
