23 New Chicks......14 Dead Chicks!

Oh, that is so sad! I lost ONE chick, and I cried for ages over her! I am so sorry for you and your chicks.

Hoping that the rest of your chicks lead long, happy, healthy lives.

Best thing to do is give each of the babies a drop of poly vi sol without iron a couple times a day for a few days to build them up. I wouldn't give antibiotics unless I knew for sure they are diseased. Unnecessary use will build resistance to the meds. How is the poo? Firm? Runny? Look for signs before meds, they may just need a vitamin boost due to stress since you don't know what they went through before you got them, they may have been shifted here n there with and without heat etc...Easy to stress a chicky...But easy to build them back up too.

Well the Murray McMurray catalog said to use the Terramyacin. I also used Sugar in the water, the feed I did because it helps against that disease coccidiosis.

I am trying my best.

The feedstores and McMurray are wrong, wrong, wrong about using antibiotics with healthy new chicks. And sugar is only if they are shipped and then, only for a day or so, though I never use sugar, just apple cider vinegar (unfiltered). The medicated feed should be fine (it's just amprolium anyway), but I know that on occasion, feed will be contaminated and be the cause of chick deaths. Could also be the health of the breeders the babies came from, too. Hard to say without a necropsy.

I'm sorry if I came on sounding a little strong...It's hard to just make yourself sound normal through writing it in posts...I know you are doing your best

I just was trying to give you some ideas. I forgot about the apple cider vinegar! And like you I always use the med feed too. And have done the sugar water the first day on shipped chicks and seen weak ones running all over the next day. My prayers are with you on the rest of your babies

Take care, Cindy

UPDATES!!!! It appears that the death has finally ended. I have not lost another chick in days. I am left with 9 out of 23...quite a terrible expeirence. I will request to see the flock from where the birds came frm in the future, or at least not chance it with an unknown person. Anyhow.
