Once you see it you'll recognize it immediately. Basically, when you go to touch them, instead of sort of scooting away, they suddenly seem to crouch down and lift their wings up at the same time.

To me, it always seemed less of a sexual "display" as it looks almost like they are trying to protect the egg inside of them. Imagine you are carrying a precious cargo and a giant hand comes down on top of you...you'd squat down too. :-D

Ok, is what it sounds like. One of my girls did that yesterday ( 25 wk Austrolorp) but no so obvious. Usually how long after that??

It's so hard to wait.

My girls have been squating for weeks now and they have red combs and NO eggs.

I hope you get some eggs soon!
I've (almost) stopped checking the nest box. The daily disappointment is just too much.

Well, I don't know what else to do or expect in "signs". I went out to test the girls when I approached them and 3 of the 5 squated for me a couple times, then ran when I reached for them a 3rd. It's a step in the right direction, but I'm getting discouraged too. I was really hoping by 25 wks. I'd have something, it doesn't help that my Mom asked me for some eggs too, she's just as excited to get big brown eggs....oh, the torture!

Wow - I just realised my girls are 21 weeks old tomorrow... WoooHooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

(So far only one girl has shown sign of being near laying - well one of the standards - her comb suddenly grew and went red about a week or two ago!)
