25 From Welp

They gave DH a scare today.

I was at work and he was tending them -- adjusting the lamp and changing out to the lower-wattage, reptile night bulb when temps went back up to a more seasonable 80+ afternoon. He'd changed out the bulb and gone back to check the temperature after half and hour and found all the chicks lying down motionless.

As soon as he started making a disruption by picking up the thermometer to read it, etc. they jumped up and started moving around.

When I got home I went out to check them and found them scattered all over the brooder, settled down snoozing. I like the reptile night bulbs when the temperatures don't require the 250 watt red monster because I think that the chicks get more sleep and are more content.

I told him that what he'd seen was exactly what should happen -- contented, snoozing chicks at the right temperature without the disruption of too much light.

I'm setting up the bigger brooder now that we got the tree work done.

It's right next to Neuchickenstein to make attending to everyone easy.

First, I got out the stapler and repaired some loose tarps.

Then I bricked up the gaps where the ground was a little uneven.

A layer of straw and a layer of shavings will keep them safely up out of any possible dampness. (There's no runoff channels through this part of the slope).

Furniture. The waterer will be on the block to the right after I move it from the other brooder.

Replaced the hook I got cut on with a loop of tripled wire. The heat lamp will hang here.

An innovation in the coop furniture. I'll be moving their huddle box (aka, their shipping box), from the other brooder, but I thought I'd try giving them a bucket on it's side to see if they like going in there.

When I open the vent on the "porch" end I can attatch it to the wire of Neuchickenstein, which should be more stable than the bamboo poles. This will start the see-don't touch immediately.

I'm moving them in an hour or so, the warmest time of the day since they'll have to be without their lamp for a bit while I swap the electric cords, etc.

We're a little too far apart to split an order next year. :D
It appears they no longer have langshans for sale. I had read somewhere, that they get their chickens from Privet, in New Mexico. I looked on Privett's site, and they are not carrying them either.
I guess Ideal and McMurray are the only hatcheries to carry them. Ideal carries only black langshans, and MM has black langshans and white langshans, but no blue. 😔 Sad. I should have ordered them last year.

I just gave them a final check for the night. I think that the heat lamp is keeping a good temperature -- lows are supposed to be in the low 50's tonight. I'll go out and check them when I'm up anyway. I could drop it another link or two on the chain, I think.

I've got the 250 bulb in since it's cooler now than when I had the Ideal Dozen in May.
You've got your hands full woman ;) ❤️
