27th or 28th May hatch, looking for buddies

Float testing...

Duds either float high, or sink low and lie down...

I had none which floated high, some which showed the 10 to 15% of the eggshell above the waterline, a couple that sank and laid on their sides, and others which did not touch bottom (or barely did) while "standing" virtually straight up and down, aircell up, and the top of the egg just below the surface.

Opinions on this? I've labelled the outright sinkers "D" for dud; the 15% floaters as "V" for viable.

Well hope is wayning for my last two in the R-com mini. Neither of them have pipped yet and we're starting to go into day 23. I'll give them another day, but my hopes are fading somewhat. I figured they'd pip today while I was at work.

Fortunately, the LG is only 8ish days behind, so if I have a lonely chick at least she will be getting company soon.

Well I got 8 out of the 9 that were supposed to hatch today. I candled the 9th, and didn't see ANY movement whatsoever. But I put it back in anyway just in case. I'll give it a few days. Sad as it was very much alive before I went into lockdown. But I have some really unique mutts. As I said before I like big mutts and I cannot lie

I think you should leave it because if other eggs are pipped than they would get shrink wrapped. If that egg really does have a pip it would get shrink wrapped too.

Oh - I won't float test the egg with the cracks in it...just watch it.

Day 23 I candled the two remaining eggs in my R-com and it looked like they had quit around day 8-10

I've NEVER had that bad of luck with this R-com. But anyways.
Just keep turning the eggs in the LG and hope for more babies in a week!
The lonely guy in the brooder hasn't noticed he's lonely yet. He's been unusually quiet so far.

ETA: I just remembered I think we had a power outage for a few hours. It was before I set the LG, so it had to have been in the first 10 days that the R-com was on. Maybe that's what happened. I keep Mason jars of water in my LG for a big heat sink so even if it goes off the temp doesn't drop too fast, but the R-com doesn't have anything like that.

Morning guys good and bad news on this side of the world. 11 of the 16 eggs i had in my bator hatched
smile.png
but it has been a very long hatch (over 4 days) and have had 1 of the chicks die in the bator just after zipping and 2 have died in the brooder
hit.gif
all of the other chicks seem fine. The ones that died were the last to hatch so dont known if that is the reason. Just

that the others are all fine

I did an "eggtopsy" as you say on the remaining egg. The chick was alive until hatch time. I am guessing it was a double yolker or is it possible for the chick to split into identicals? I had a chick with 4 legs. 2 butt ends. I have a picture but didn't want to post unless it was wanted. Poor baby. It couldn't have lived but it was beautiful.

On another note, I have a question for all you broody hens over there hatching your eggs. I want to hatch a batch of my own, I am uncertain of the exact amount of times to turn the egg in the bator and the exact placement of the eggs to start. I will not be able to buy an expensive system, really will most likely just be making one of my own. So I will be turning my own eggs. Any advice would be appreciated.
