27th or 28th May hatch, looking for buddies

I love animals more than most people. People think I'm crazy for loving my chickens but hey they're so darn cute!!! Plus they give you eggs! My dogs don't give me anything except headaches! I love them to pieces though. Couldn't love Zelda (our Mtn Kerr and Beagle mix) or Jasper (my VERY attatched long-haired silver dapple Dachshund) any more if I gave birth to them. Jasper drives me up the wall sometimes because he's constantly under my feet. He was abused bad before I rescued him. They love going in my chicken coop with me to check for eggs and feed and what not. People at work tell me birds are dirty animals but I just laugh and tell them we see a lot nastier things at work!

After checking my calendar, and counting to 18 several times. I've deduced that since I loaded my eggs in on the 7th, I count May 8th as my first day. So, today should be my fourth day. That would make May 25th my lockdown?

I should expect chicks on the 26th and 27th of May? You see, this is why I need a hatching buddy. LOL I can't seem to get my days straight. You may have just saved my hatch Natchlaly. Thank you.

I think your chicks are due on the 28th

lockdown evening of 25th (end of day 18) +3 days =28th

You are correct Kraftyladies. You set your eggs on the 6th, then the 7th would be your first day, according to what I have read here, you count your first day as the next day after you set your eggs. That would make your lockdown the same day as Natchlaly's and one day ahead of mine.

Kraftyladies, GeoKan is spot on

Wow! I miss one day on here and there are 3 new pages worth of posts! I got busy yesterday, then ny the time I got home I had to book our Vacation, so that took a while. I got home from work today and there was my broody hen Gretta ( my incubator
smile.png
) walking around the yard! I got nervous, I know shell get off to eat but I hadnt seen her do it yet. So I left her alone after checking to see if the eggs we're still warm ( they were) and looked out a half hour later and she was still walking around, so now I'm getting worried
barnie.gif
this being her first time broody I thought maybe she had had enough. So I go out to put her back on the eggs with her her favorite treat in hand and she runs away! She always comes up to me and let's me pick her up, but, thankfully she was running away so she could get back on her eggs
big_smile.png
So that's why she ran away, probably thought I was gonna carry her for a while, and she needed to get back on the eggs! So how is every one else coming along?

Hi Sorin, glad t hear Gretta got back on your eggs

. After my crisis the other day I candled a few of my eggs and there was some good veinage going on so am still hopeful that I will have a few fuzz butts. Gonna do a full candle on Friday night and will update you all on how things are looking. Take care of those eggs

I'm glad to hear your eggs were still good

I'm mad at myself, it never occured to me to try and candle the eggs while she was off them

Ut I'll be home all day Sunday so maybe I can catch her off them then, she will let me pick her up off the eggs, but I don't want t if I don't have to

Oh thank goodness! I candled my eggs with a high powered bike light you wear when mountain biking at night, and so far 5 of my 14 eggs have veins and growth! The battery died before I could candle all of them. But I'm worried I had like 3 that looked like they had blood rings. I'm not sure but I believe that that is what it is. I'm gonna leave them in for a few more days and recandle them in a few days. It's only day 6 of incubation and this is my first attempt to incubate eggs! I'm excited!!!

I'm so excited! I candled a couple of my eggs and I saw some veins!! I didn't candle them all, I didn't want to break them, but I had to check again when my husband reminded me of the little LED flashlight we had tucked away in a drawer.... I feel like a little kid at Christmas or something. It just neat watching something like this grow. I'm going to try and leave them alone though before I do break them, or disturb them too much.

Maybe around 10 or 11 days I will look again

DAY 5 FOR ME!

Made it through another day. My bator did some fluctuating yesterday.
he.gif
Not too sever. It went to 100.7 and I cracked the back lid where my heat chamber is located and it slowly cooled back down. I really think the temperature in the house has a lot to do with what is going on in my incubator. Trying to get the AC just right and manipulating the vents on the bator is driving me nutso.

Sorin — I'm happy to hear Gretta is back on the eggies! That would make me all kinds of nervous. I think you were so concerned about the eggs that candling was the furthest from you mind. I know it would be for me.

All this talk of candling from you ladies has given me the itch real bad. I'll have to purchase an LED flashlight before I can do that though.

I'll be taking a trip to Wally World tomorrow to pick up one of those 110 lumen powered jobbies for my Marans eggs. Them suckers are dark, dark, dark. I hope I'll be able to see something. I'll do my best to gets some pics. Can't promise they'll come out very well.

I'm also working on a homemade LOCKDOWN incubator. I've learned much from my first one, so I think this next one will be a bit better.

How's things going with everyone? Hope all is well!

re: pictures of candling tried to take one the other night after my crisis but is a bit tricky to hold an egg, a torch and a camera at the same time
lau.gif
gonna get my son on side tomorrow with the camera and hopefully I may be able to get some decent pictures. If I do manange it
fl.gif
I will post them as soon as I have 5 mins free x. Getting so excited already as I have seen veinage
woot.gif
If I look in my bator once I must look in there 20 times a day. Thank god I have solid wood flooring otherwise I would have also worn out a path in the carpet
lol.png

I told a story. I was gonna wait until day 10 to candle ALL of them, but well... I couldn't resist. So I candled.
idunno.gif
Anyway, there was development in 10/12!! The other two I am not sure of, one of which had a crack in it. So being it is cracked, do I need to cull it out? Wait a little longer? Will bacteria get in it and hurt anyway being it's cracked? The other one was a darker egg, so am not gonna rule it out yet either.
