2nd post - please help - impacted crop - SURGERY COMPLETE

Good to hear all is well. Did you pull anything out that wasn't supposed to be in there? Chickens eat the craziest stuff.

what kind of suture do you generally use for this? Obviously, absorbable for the crop, but what about the skin? (sorry to hijack a little)

More often than not I use plain old sewing thread to sew them up. I've done two crop surgeries and many other "sew them up" procedures. My vets gives or sells me the pre-threaded cutting needles with absorbable sutures and they do work much easier because the needle cuts so easily through the tough skin. BUT....she has also told me that plain sewing thread works just fine and dissolve eventually. I even sewed up the insides, and muscles all badly torn from leg, of a rooster a dog had gotten ahold of. I only had the plastic, non-absorbable sutures and I used those because I wanted them to hold as long as possible so that he could regain use of his leg - which he did. He walked very gingerly for a few weeks but today, months later, he's just fine and dandy.

They are very resilient creatures with an amazing ability to heal.

no nothing crazy - just tons of stray, small grit but I did pull out a super long piece of grass and a died leaf at the base so I am wondering if that was her problem..

since we just decide to do it asap - I had to use things I had.. as for the sutures we used very, very thin fishing line - I only put 2 in the croup and more on the outside.. everything was cleaned with alcohol and then heated... to make as sterile as possible.. I will remove the outer sutures when they heal.. Just leaving the two internal ones. I read on here of others using fishing line so I hope it fine..

I had to help her if not she would have died - at least I tried and did my best - she is still doing wonderfully - wants to go back outside but I keep telling her she has to wait..
