Most are dry and panting! Is it still too early?!?!?

One chick has what I hope to be poop hanging out of his rear, but maybe its something else...

The other chicks are pecking at it. Can I remove them!?!?!?

Take it out and put it in the brooder in a shoebox if you can. careful it doesn't get chilled ir too hot. Keep it warm but don't let others peck it. Most likely it is part of the yolk that hasn't absorbed yet. Watch it and don't let it start bleeding. This is what we call a rough navel.

If they are mostly dry and you think too hot in the incubator you can move them to the brooder. Do it fast. Opening it could cause problems with the rest of your hatch.

The chick! I must have let it start to bleed. It's not looking so good for the one. Poor guy. It is pretty bloody. He is still alive and peeping and sleeping but he looks like he's in a lot of pain. I feel bad. Should I let him die in there? What do I do? I don't want to put a chick out of its misery. And how???

As for the others...there are ELEVEN baby chicks! All but ONE hatched. Can you believe that? It was like popcorn, they were popping here and there and everywhere!!!

By the way, the last two to hatch were in the Homemade 'Bator. They are looking very well though.

One problem though, most of my chicks arent as fluffy and cute as I had expected. (Who am I kidding, theyre all awesome).
But the feathers are more hard and sticky-looking than fluffy...

Congrats on your hatches! I also have a couple sticky chicks...my little chipmunk that I hatched and my BG that hatched out two days early...and I read that it can be caused by too high humidity during hatch? Hopefully someone smart will reply soon. My chicks are really preening though, and they are starting to look better- but its been a two days for one of them, and four days for the other.

I am sorry about the little one. If you think it won't make it and is in bad shape end its suffering. Sharp scissors and a trash bag. Take the head off clean and swift. It is not easy to do but culling and not letting an animal dependent on us continue to suffer is part of responsible animal husbandry.

If you think it has a chance let it sleep and see if it gains stregnth in 24 hours.

Congrats on the rest of the hatch. Glad that homemade bator worked out for you.

It may take them 24 hours to get all fluffy and fancy. They don't always fluff out quickly. I have had them take a day or two to get all fluffy butted.

You are now ready for the next hatch

Sterilize your bators. Wash with hot soapy water. Soak in a diluted bleach solution. Rinse with clean water. Set in the blazing sun for 8 hours.

Then get some duck eggs
