3 1/2 week old Chick, help! weak legs, opening mouth to breathe?

Sorry for the sick chicken. I’m dealing with chick loss right now, so I’m reading as much as I can online, to see what others have done.

I’m grateful to strangers like @Wyorp Rock who help other strangers so frequently.
So sorry for your loss too! It sucks no matter what age. Crazy how even with chickens it can pull on our heart strings, just like our children. I’m even praying over this little one! Certainly grateful fo so many willing to offer help and wisdom!

There’s some sort of bacterial infection I thought that mainly affects ducks where they lose their balance like that. I’m sorry I can’t be of more assistance than that...not very helpful, I know...but I’d guess your bird needs a type of antibiotic to help.

I don’t think it’s cocci. But I could be wrong about that.

I have a 4 or 5 year old hen who is open mouth breathing, lethargy, limping right now. Treated her with Sulmet (also treats cocci)..she seems a bit better, but is still not getting up, eating very much, and is still panting/open mouth breathing. It’s really tough to find out what’s wrong. I’ve tried so much.

I wish you and your chick the best.

Hank you so much! Going to try antibiotics next

If you have the liquid Corid, you can give him a couple of drops orally of the undiluted Corid twice a day to boost him. So sorry about your you little cockerel. Your have been given good advice. I would remove the chick grit for now, since he is only eating chick feed and egg, and doesn’t require that for those. Start it back when he eats other foods or on grass. Here is a good thread with pictures of homemade chick chairs and slings, and you can place food and water in front of him:

Thank you!

TO lol those who provided wisdom and help like thank you! This chick, Miracle, is now doing about 90 percent better. After lots of THC and a round of Corid and some bird physical therapy, back to his/her new self. (Not so sure it’s a cockrel anymore.) rainy day so inside play! @Wyorp Rock

This is great! I'm glad to see that he is doing so much better!
He is a bit stiff legged isn't he?
If you aren't giving him any vitamins, I would. I would give him 1/4 tablet B-Complex daily for 5 days. See if he improves a little more with those. B vitamins will not hurt him and any excess is excreted in the urine so there is no risk of vitamin overdose.

So happy! Hope the chick is still doing well.

Have to comment, my hen is doing better. Still not sure what it is, but she’s much better than before. Not panting.

One other note- my sick hen perked up when I mixed royal jelly in with some yogurt. Royal jelly is expensive (the fresh kind is, but the dried kind in capsules are cheaper and might do ok too) but it’s full of vitamins, especially the B vitamins. (In fact I heard one practitioner say to forget taking a multi vitamin or lots of different vitamins, just take royal jelly.) It’s also naturaly a probiotic. It’s the stuff that only the queen bee gets to eat (except the very young baby bees who are fed this) and it’s to keep her strong and healthy. anyway, I gave my sick hen about a heaping teaspoon full. She perked up greatly afterward. (Also giving her manuka honey and propolis, but I’m assuming it’s the royal jelly as it’s known to help give extra energy.)
