Right now it is simply dirt... lots of sandy dirt LOL. We will have to do a bit more leveling because of the digging to install the boards and fence underground. As soon as we are completely finished with the coop we are going to get several dump trailer loads of wood chips for the floor. We have a friend who owns an underground utility company... he has huge piles of wood chips (from clearing commercial lots), so he lets us have all we want.

What a good friend! We have sandy soil here, too. So at least it drains well. I'm using "deep litter" in my coop now and have been very happy with it. I only completely clean it out twice a year and there's no smell at all.
I know I'll have more questions later...HA!
Good Night from Texas!

we have roofing metal cut to fit the ends of our coop. We simply stand up the metal and screw it to the top and bottom boards... making a wall to block the wind. Then we remove it at soon as the weather warms up. We have used this method on our old coop for many years and never had a problem.

Just FYI... the pneumatic staple gun we purchased is awesome!!! My DH is in love with it :)LOL It made attaching the chicken wire a breeze. Anyone who is building a larger coop/run should really consider one.
