3 day old chick panting, need info please.

Does it look like sneezing or like this video...

No nothing like this at all. Not even any strange sounds. No wheeze, cough, runny nose, just slight panting, and his body temp correlates with the panting. He can't seem to self regulate. When I hold him and get him cooled down it stops. Then he gets too cool, warm him back up and it starts again.

Sometimes while hatching a chick can inhale some of the remaining fluid leading to breathing problems further on.
Oh wow okay, that does make sense and I remember now reading about this somewhere else too, but just had forgotten. I do remember some of the hatchling's egg shells had a small amount of liquid in them still and were wet inside. While others were just damp or completely dried out. Wish I had taken notes as to the condition of their shells now.

So I talked with my mother-in-law whom raises parrots, she said well have you checked it's crop? *light bulb, smacks self on forhead* No I have not, and so I did. Poor little guy feels like he has a rock in there!! She said eyedrop him 5 drops of water or until it feels like a loose water balloon but not tight, then very gently massage it. So I did, it broke into 2 pieces, then 3. She said ok stop now and do it again every hour. He isn't panting per say, he is trying to digest what is in his crop and he can't. That is why his body temp keeps going up & down. Another lesson learned. She said it may take a day or two before he is back to normal and then start him on a warm liquidey mash of chick feed ground up with water, and let it heal up, that it will be sore from what he is going through. So for now he is on liquids for 24-48 hours. Then liquid mash for 2 days, then moist mash for 2 days, then back to ground solids for a week, then crumbles. I'm going to trust her advice, as she is an expert in raising birds of all kinds but specializes in parrots. Yay! Just sharing this info, to help others out there. Check the crop first! LoL :)

P.s. we put our deformed (leg grew backwards in egg and wing is half size and hangs down & back) chick with him for now, that we were going to have to cull, so he will not be alone for the next 2 weeks. She is actually learning to get around now with such a big space and only him in her way. They have both stopped crying and snuggle. Double blessing, things happen for a reason sometimes.

Wet mash is always easier on the kids.
I mix with a little unflavored Pedialyte in addition to the water to provide a little boost.
Good advice and a good ending, always a wonderful thing.:)
Thank you, and I'm thinking of avoiding any future problems and getting the other 11 on the wet mash as well. Might as well, knowing it won't hurt them and others use it as well. I like the pedialyte idea, a lot of people recommend it.

Something about having it moist makes it 100× better.
You're a gourmet chef to them now.:D
You are so right! They turned into little velociraptors and devoured it. They cleaned it all up! Soooooo funny! I just tested out a small amount first to see how they would react. It was a stampede to the food! Haha Haha :celebrate :lau
