3 dead chicks in 8 hours. What am I doing wrong?!?

I purchased from McMurrys. The chicks were cold stressed. Lost 3 niederrheiner and a bielefelder. Now this one. All vaccinated for Mareks and coccidiosis.
Hatchery claims they rarely have issues with shipping and blame USPS. I will NEVER order via mail again…I feel helpless watching these babies struggle like this.
TSC chicks seem a few days older, one flew across the 6 ft brooder- not what I would expect from a <week old chick.
Ok then you can rule out the hatchery having bad chicks. McM has a good reputation. USPS sucks. I’m sorry. 😞

I truly think if someone made a chick shipping company just for poultry and eggs, and offered overnight delivery, they could make a ridiculous amount of money. Id certainly pay extra to get birds in 1 day, especially from a company that stored them correctly and kept the trucks at an appropriate temperature.

That would be very nice. Imagine a McMurry jet Would require regional outposts to guarantee overnight. I paid shipping on this order so really no huge difference.

Tried YouTube thing, had to make acct, verify, will need to watch tutorial to get the hang of it…too much fuss taking my attn away from care of this sick chick. Moreover, viewing of the video is not going to change current management strategy of fluids, warmth, egg yoke and rest so will just focus on that for now. Thanks everyone. ❤️ I really appreciate all the support here. I will give update in a few hrs.

Where does your local TSC or chicks from? They get them shipped as well. What part of the UP are you in? I lived in Marquette and south of there briefly once. There used to be an AF base there years ago.
TSC gets chicks from Meyes hatchery I believe. They were shipped, yes, but I visualized them active before purchasing. My reasoning is that upon arrival to TSC the chicks were warmed, watered, fed. So if I see them at <week old thriving at the feeders and sprinting around I feel more confident that shipping stress is no longer an issue. I know there are other potential issues, and they are not vaccinated so getting their immunity up to par will be a priority soon. That is my naïve rationale anyway, mind you I am new to this.
I am just southeast of Marquette. Sounds like you may have been just SW of MQT nearer to the base. The AF base is still there but not used as military installation far as I am aware. DH is a navy guy but did some drills at AF base for reserves at times.
I love the UP but it has its drawbacks like any other geographically isolated area. I drive a lot from top to bottom of UP. It’s nothing to put on 500 miles a week, but it beats the city life by miles (pun).

Just talked to hatchery. They agree it’s odd that ALL Niederrheiners have passed or dying and will launch an inquiry. The supervisor said it was a judgement call to include heat pack or not (they did not). My concern was no critical thinking was used in that decision, just 11standard breed after April 1, load and go. Never mind the gigantic winter storm sprawling across the Midwest (hatchery is in Iowa). Supervisor agreed there was lack of judgement as it was not unknown to them. Anyway, she wanted to give a full refund of my order which I declined. I was not going to order again but to be fair one bad experience does not equal a bad company so I agreed to accept a new shipment in June. She is replacing my losses and adding another nieder plus no charge on shipping a sml order. For that I am grateful.
The customer service and readiness to listen and act impressed me which grateful factored into my decision to give them another shot.

Nieder chick still alive. I was able to get 1 drop nutridrench and 1/4 mL water in last 2 hrs. She remains lethargic. Crop is squishy, full. Stool is bright green. She does not bear weight. When I disturb her she still flicks her leg at her chin very fast, just like a dog scratching it’s ears.
One other chick is with her under heat pad (90deg) cave. He was weak but perking up now. His crop is empty, stools normal btw. He responds to her occasional weak chirp with an answer of his own.
I made video on YouTube but can’t get link here. That’s new to me AND so is iPhone. Will have to use imagination or fedex me a teenager.

I was up every 2 hrs nursing my two sick chicks. Mystery chick has a wound on upper beak but he takes sml amt of syringed egg yoke with lytes water but shakes his head with every attempt, won’t take mash. Nostrils seem clear. Crop empty, stool is normal but not a lot of course.
Sadly, my lil Nieder passed this morning. Her breathing was agonal and she was listless. Crop still squishy. As I was tending Mystery she gave a chirp (that really got Mystery’s attn) then flopped on her side and died.
I’d like to say I’m enjoying being a new chick mom, but can’t, not with 45% loss.
I should be enjoying the others that are health but I look at them thinking to myself who’s next…anyway, I am not giving up at all. I know this is a part of raising animals but it sucks to have so much death in such a short time. Thanks for reading, assisting and being ever so supportive BYC.
