3 Legged Chick

While I was claning her up today from her incredibly messy behind which is now the entire rear half of her, I noticed a "bubble" like thing on her back half near where the 3rd leg is. Its about half the size of a dime, but I don't know what to do with it. When she chirps it shrinks a little then gets big again when she stops. Any suggestions?

i think thats super neat....so what are your plans with him/her? are you keeping it? i wouldnt destroy it...there are plenty of people who would want it (like myself) if you dont. also, i think that is most definitely a result of WAY too much inbreeding!!! that makes me think twice about ordering from mcmurrays. i dont think something like that happens from just breeding daughter to daddy or sister to brother, i think thats maybe a another generation or two of inbreeding. making me think they really dont give a hoot about what breeds to what, just so long as its the same breed (hopefully they still have that). i one had a couple of kittens (from the same litter) with some paws that had 2 or 3 extra toes and some with just one extra and some normal. other than that they were perfectly fine though. they were stray barn kitties, so you know how that happened. im pretty sure mommy was also sissy. anyways, he seems to keep that back leg tucked up where you cant really see it....or maybe im wrong, hard to tell from the pictures, but im sure that there are no other problems with him. hes probably perfectly healthy. just be careful when introducing him to other birds, as they might see that as something wrong and pick on him or exclude him completely. OR i may be completely wrong, maybe they wont even notice or care or maybe theyll think hes some sort of cool chicken super hero....

What you are seeing is probably her belly button, where the yolk was absorbed. Just let it dry up and keep it clean so it will heal. Wish I could get a 3 legger sometime!

She didn't make it through the night. That thing popped and ozzed all over the bedding where I found her and it was a dark reddish/white substance. It's really sad because she was my favorite one. the 3rd leg was also incredibly dark red at the top part where it was hanging on to her. I moved her by herself last night after I noticed that spot so that other chicks wouldn't pick at it. I feel really bad, but I don't know what I did wrong.

awww im terribly sorry to hear that!!!.....you did nothing wrong! it was probably just another complication just like the 3rd leg....probably not a coincidence. it sounds like the substance that came out of the bump was a mixture of puss and blood. puss would mean an infection of some sort? maybe it was some sort of psyst or tumor. i still dont see why it bursting would cause her death. it quite possibly could have been an internal organ that was patruding (spelling*)....mayb the intestine? or it could very well been a hernia (spelling again lol*) Also her being so young, the pain alone from it maybe could have given her a heart attack or just have been to much to bear....causing her death....hard to really tell....im not sure what to tell you other than its NOT your fault!
