My chickens are 3 months old. Is that too early to switch them to layer feed?

I'm about to run out of starter/grower and not sure whether to buy anymore if they are close to laying. I can get a 50lb bag of layer feed for the same price as a 25lb bag of starter/grower.

Its still to early, what breed(s) are you raising? Leghorn's and Layer Hybrids you wanna start around 16 to 18 weeks, larger heritage types are 18 to 20 weeks. Also the fact that its winter time will likely delay this even longer unless your running some additional lighting for them.

When you do switch, do it gradually. Slowly up their layer portion and decrease the grower over a week or two. Changing feeds suddenly is hard on their system.

They are white leghorns. I just figured up that I am giving them around 1 lb of food per day for 6 chickens so a 25 lb bag should last 25 days.

I don't really have any extra lighting for laying, just a solar porch light is what I call it. It is dark in the coop.
